It wasn't too bad. I actually felt that the certainty of their deaths meant that the show wasn't that exciting until he finally decided to help at the end but that may just be me. It was great to see them mention the Ice Warriors but can somebody remind me what year the Dalek Invasion of Earth was supposed to take place (i.e. when Susan left the TARDIS). It wasn't mentioned and I thought it would have been a rather significant event in Earth history that would warrant some coverage!

Lindsay Duncan was pretty awesome. I think I agree that it would have been more sensible to take her out into space to ensure that her disappearance/presumed death still inspired her grandaughter but by the end she was quite frightened by him so blowing her head own off rather than interfering in the time stream might have seemed like the lesser of two evils.

My main criticism of most of Davies' episodes is his tendency to elongate the characters' self-congratulatory monologues. They'd have as much impact if they were half as long most of the time. The Sarah Jane Smith crew spend a lot of time on arrogant self-congratulation too and it becomes tiresome.

Overall it reminds me of Donna's comments (in the Runaway Bride was it?) where she said the Doctor shouldn't travel alone because sometimes he needs someone to stop him and that may be why he is going to revisit her in the Xmas special... The (Ood) Watcher and Cloister Bell are nice touches reminiscent of Logopolis.

I'm not a big fan of John Simm's turn as the Master because I found him to be too manic - almost like the Joker (a lengthier turn by Derek Jacobi would have been far more welcome) but I like the Master as a character.

I tend to agree that some more Time Lords will be making an appearance soon. Maybe the Rani saved a few; or maybe Romana got some into E-space. There are a few possibilities. For my part, I'd like to know what happened to Susan who was stuck on Earth with no TARDIS in the aftermath of the Dalek invasion.

The whole point was that she was supposed to die at the base, with the implication that despite not knowing the exact details, she was saving Earth from some horrific fate. Before the Doctor's intervention, she probably sent a quick message before detonating it. Not enough to say what happened, only to warn that it was the only way to save them all.

Regardless, she didn't inspire anybody by painting her bathroom with gray matter.

When you get the DVD pause on the News Story that appears at the end. The other two survivors told that story of what happened on Mars and how she had saved the Earth from being infected.

1 question - where were the Reapers?

Reapers only appear when a Paradox is created. (In "Father's Day" Rose causes an earlier version of herself and the Doctor to wink out of existance. But if the past versions didn't exist how could the future ones still be there.)

If they turned up every time History was changed they'd appear in just about every story!

We don't know when it happened but we know it happened later than 2164, more than a century after Waters of Mars.

In the DW novel I Am a Dalek the Doctor travels back in time and alters history so that a man who died in the present after only having known his wife a short while gets to meet her earlier on in his life and thus spend more time with her than he did in the original scheme of things. But no one accused him of being an insane god then.

That must have been cause they were "little people" ;).

That and the producers have 'selective continuity' remembering some past stories and forgeting others. Although, the 'in plot' reason can be because the Doctor (maybe the time war too) is always changing history of events whereas the past past Doctors may have had those adventures but they dont exist in the standard timeline anymore.

It would be interesting to see, after all these years, how many of these stories are now part of an altered timeline (and the Doctors own timeline) and don't exist anymore in the current timeline. Maybe this is why it a huge deal when the doctors meet up with there former selves.

^Which goes back to "Rose" and his online fanbase and also

"You're in the biggest library in the whole universe, look me up!"

By the way, anyone wonder if the original plan was for WoM to air on Saturday when it would have been November 21st?

RTD said it was the original plan, yes. to have an episode set exactly 50 years later.

Adelaide mentions at one point something about the Earth's atmosphere and weather being in a bad state in the time she lives in, which is one of her reasons for coming out into space. But the Second Doctor story The Enemy of the World, had Salamandar create the Sun-Catcher device to control Earth's weather around 2017 (or 2030 according to the Target novelisation), and the Gravitron was built on the moon to control weather in 2050 according to The Moonbase. I didn't expect such sloppiness on RTD's part.

I don't necessarily blame him but in a story point of view

"different details but the story's still the same"

Anyone notice the Tardis has changed already since April.

Haven't seen it yet (it's primed and ready for tonight), but I'm happy to hear that it's at least better than Planet of the Dead. lol

I don't see what's so bad about "Planet of The Dead"

It was the 'calm before the storm' one final mindless adventure with a flying bus before the heavy stuff/drama comes.

As RTD said "it's the last time the doctor has fun"

Initial overnights (these will be revised later in the morning) state that The Waters Of Mars got: 9.1m viewers.

How does that measure up? Good ratings, bad?
Not the best they've ever had, but still pretty good. I read X-Factor/I'm a celeb beat it though.

from Broadcastnow.co.uk
Doctor Who special The Waters of Mars kicked off with a huge audience of 10.4m last night, but that was beaten by ITV1 pairing the return of I’m a Celebrity with X Factor.

Viewers were spoiled for choice across the terrestrials, with the return of Top Gear, a new episode of Garrow’s Law and the premiere of Clint Eastwood movie Flags of Our Fathers, but David Tennant’s return as the wide-eyed time lord kicked things off nicely at 7pm.
According to overnight figures from Attentional, an average of 9.1m (33.9%) tuned in for the hour-long special, with the audience peaking at 7.55pm with 10.4m (36.4%).
