Actually, spores are even more robust than that. Some can be heavily radiated and stay intact. But unlike simple amino acids and other organics, we don't have evidence that they (or any exobiologic products) have come from space.

So is that bad in that there might be surviving spores on Mars that are going to screw with us some day, or good in that it might be easier for us to seed Mars with things more to our liking?
Given the squirrel thread, if Mars ever had life of some sort, I'd say there's likely a couple timebombs waiting for us there...
Spores already on Mars (big if) won't help us "seed" Mars. But they could be time bombs if we colonate - just like viruses (much smaller if and bigger threat).

I'm guessing that they won't be announcing life on Mars, the question is, will they say that they've found water there today, or do they have info on where water that used to be there went? I'm going to try and watch the press conference.

Looks like it is confirmation that they found flowing water currently on Mars. It is brine water (very salty). They have already been talking about this for a while, but I guess the "big" announcement was today.
I guess with the low temperatures on mars and the low atmospheric pressure, brine-water would be fairly resilient on the planet but still likely have periods of being frozen depending on the time of the Martian day and Martian season.
Needlessly to say, though, this discovery is remarkable and probably opens up a lot more possibility for there being life presently on Mars. Life can survive in very extreme temperatures here on Earth and even in extreme levels of salinity, it'd be likely resilient life could have developed on Mars that could survive the extreme temps, low pressure and high salinity of this water.

It's not a question of "if" I think but when. And when we do find ANY kind of life or signs life once was there on Mars will things change for people? Will it have any kind of effect on people?
And what of places like Europa? I am almost certain life is there. Not just because of movies but I have a feeling there is some kind of life there as it's an active moon with actual flowing water under the ice..

According to Rule 67' Earth based space programs are prohibited from going near extra terrestrial waters for fear of contaminating it with Earth life.
The rule is assinine because throughout all phases of human history humans have migrated to new sources of water on Earth that ensured the survival of the human tribe.
To deny humanity and Earth the right to explore new water resources not only on Mars but any other planet in the Universe and move closer to those new sources of water is denying humanity the right to survive.

I don't think that we should stop exploring the solar system. But I doubt we're going to Mars to get some water. We have water here already and even if we have to process salt water, that's cheaper than going to Mars and back.
If Europa does have life, we should avoid contaminating it at all costs. We should try to study it, but we don't want to harm the first life we find off world.
All very valid points. Especially so for Europa. I'm not sure there is life but given the conditions there and the fact some of the water is free flowing and not cold I would not at all be surprised if something is there if we could send probes under the ice...

OMG it's a no brainer
The universe by design prohibits this because of the immense distances one has to travel to get from world A to world B..
If a creator did design this they were being very deliberate in laying the universe out with great distances from even the closest world. Maybe they didn't want each world contacting the other so set great distances for them to prevent this..
