Am I correct to assume it is best to watch SG-1 as the starting point, and not any of the movies (first episode being a 90 some odd min pilot movie)

Definitely not, no. The pilot won't make much sense without the original movie, and the episodes that follow the pilot won't much sense without that either.
Yes, the events of the pilot are supposed to happen about 1 year after the events of the original movie.Definitely not, no. The pilot won't make much sense without the original movie, and the episodes that follow the pilot won't much sense without that either.
Movie as in the Spader/Russell film, or another movie? (I have seen the Spader/Russell film, even if it was years ago. )
Same character, not the same actor. Is the same Daniel Jackson in both the 1994 movie and the show?

Yeah the movie wasn't bad. It took me a while and a internet search on Ra's character to find out Ra was a guy.
