Watching S4s Nemesis for the first time

I am not Spock

You know, with the sheer number of Star Trek episodes and movies in existence, watching each and every one of them is no easy feat. But I've nearly done it. In my 13 years as a Star Trek fan (started watching in 94 at the age of 12, and I'm 25 now), I've managed to see all of TOS, all of TNG, nearly all of DS9 (except for 'Valiant'), all of ENT (except for the infamous 'These Are The Voyages' which I'm yet to see  ) and all of VOY except for 'Repentance', 'Destiny' and 'Nemesis'.

I dug out my VOY s4 DVDs for the first time in a while yesterday, and watched 'Nemesis' for the first time. I quite liked it. For once, the producers attempted something interesting with the aliens language. They spoke in colloquialisms that were alien, but still comprehensible enough (do you fathom the Krady beast, defender?)

The plot about brainwashing and propaganda was quite interesting, too. It was like a 'Nam movie with Chakotay in it. The only letdown for me was that the budget constraints meant we only had a weak ground battle, in which the soldiers were just firing into the 'trunks' at offscreen foes. Star Trek doesn't often do ground battles very well, IMO.

What did people think of this ep?

I think it suffers slightly from Beltran's acting as most of the Chakotay centered episodes do, but still a well written hour.

I liked the episode. Probably one of my favorite Chakotay episodes as I consider most of them snoozefests.

Normally I don't like Beltran's acting but I thought he was good in this episode.

It's definately the best episode focusing on Chakotay.

Yeah. That's a very competitive field.

But seriously, I liked it. It's a solid episode, it's got a good twist - and uses Star Trek's convention that 'the ugly aliens are evil, the ones with minimal makeup are good' routine and turns it on its head. After years of the Cardassians and the Bajorans, I was genuinely surprised - a solid hour altogether. :)

And he can't even look at the enemy at the end... Beltran gives that moment the right weight.

"Wrestle your trembles to rages, fathom?" ;)

I just loved the way the wrote them to speak.

This is my second favorite Chakotay ep., "Distant Origin" is my first.

"Nemesis" truly drew me into the plight of the native group that Chakotay ended up with, so the twist at the end threw me for a loop the first time around. Even knowing what is going on, it's still got some nice character work, tension, and action.

I liked this episode. I think it`s a good Chakotay episode with a interesting and topical theme.
I also liked Beltran`s acting in it.

I absolutely loathed this episode. It was good until the whole "oh, it didn't really happen" cop-out which totally ruined all the work put into it up to that point.

It's one of the only episodes of Star Trek where I actually felt angry at the writers after watching it
