Watching Red Dwarf for the First Time

As an American, Snaploud, are there many cultural reference In Red Dwarf that you don't understand?

A lot of the name references are completely lost on me. You can usually tell a good amount from the context, though, so it doesn't really bother me.

I'm the same way. I get the humor, but miss some of the specific references.

"I'm not a combination of the speaking clock, moss bross and teasie weasie". I always assumed the last two are referring to a tailor/clothier and a hairdresser. So, still funny in the context of that scene.

I haven't watched the series for about a year, so it's time to get the DVD's out again. Or at least watch the "backed-up" eps on the old computer.

I kinda envy you, seeing it for the first time. If you get the humor, it's such a different show and it hasn't lost anything on subsequent viewings.

And I agree for the most part on what series' are the best. I love 1-6 pretty much the same, and like 7 & 8 & even BTE was OK.

1-2: cheap, boring, occasionally depressing, occasionally funny
3-6: the golden years. funny as hell and a sci-fi adventure show.
7: so terrible. No Rimmer. no action. no funny. Kochanski is horrible.
8: the funniest year. I really liked the new premise.
Back to Earth: just, horrible. horrible.

I agree with the parts in bold.

Disagree with series 8 being the best, I wasn't really a fan.

I never got around to watching Back To Earth.

Good God... I only watched the series properly up to and including Series 6.

"Gunmen of the Apocalypse" was the only one I saw from Series 7 and that was by accident - it didn't really seem like my cup of tea.

Regarding Series 8, "Krytie TV" seems the most entertaining. However, I saw that one on TV at the time and it was shit...

I haven't seen any Red Dwarf since 1999...

...Except that was a series 6 episode...and it won an Emmy. ;)

Oh bugger... so it was :alienblush: Oh well... it didn't do well for me. I guess I haven't seen any Series 7 then...

...but my point still stands. :scream:

Despite all the hatred flowing toward Series 7, I thought Stoke Me a Clipper was an excellent episode, from its awesome sendup of James Bond and Indiana Jones at the beginning to the touching ending where Rimmer sees all of the light bees of the previous Aces.

The episode where Lister gets a living virus and his arm is amputated wasn't very funny though. I don't remember much of anything about the rest of Series 7.

Stoke Me a Clipper was great. Blue from S7 was good as well, that was the one where Rimmer has gone and Lister is reminiscing about him. Kryten's Rimmer ride at the end was classic.

I love 1-6 - with 1 & 5 being my favourites. 7 was patchy, 8 was utter bilge. Didn't think much of BtE either.

Oh yeah those five minutes of "Stoke" were amazing; the James Bond opening and the musical number. Rest was terrible, though :p

I agree that Stoke Me a Clipper was a fun episode. My complaints are really about post-Rimmer episodes of series seven (the ones with Kochanski).

I'm a lot more fond of series seven than most. It's series eight that isn't up to snuff, in my opinion. Starbug gets stuck up a rat's ass? Really? "Cassandra" is a hoot, but series eight is really hit or miss, and it doesn't have anything as fun as the Ace Rimmer sequence in "Stoke me a Clipper" or the Rimmer song (from..."Blue," I think). The ending is fun, though.

I still haven't seen Back to Earth.
