Watching Picard a second time currently

‪‪I loved it the first time around, though like many, ‪‪I found that they fumbled the ending a bit.

Having now done a few rewatches, ‪‪I’ve enjoyed it more with each viewing. The combined strengths of the cast of characters and their portrayers really make it a tremendous success for me.

Despite some less than stellar pacing toward the end, the characters and their emotional beats and relationships introduced in and formed over the course of the season worked overall.

The show definitely benefits from a dedicated rewatch, as opposed to viewing one episode per week in isolation. The season tells one long, cohesive story and watching it as such makes for a much smoother experience.

I started my rewatch last night with Children of Mars, Remembrance, and Maps and Legends. I enjoyed both episodes. It really wasn't until Episode 5 when I started to sour on the show and then they killed off Hugh which was what I disagreed with. I'm hoping to like it more than I did originally and I'm looking forward to seeing Napenthe again.

I binged it yesterday in prep for Season 2.
I still enjoyed it.
Though I had forgotten about the tentacles coming out of the breech in the last episode.
They remind me of Inspector Gadget.

I saw the episode that I felt was one of the worst episodes of Star Trek ever created last night: Stardust City Rag.

It was the second time I've seen this episode, and I have to say it went down easier because I know what was going to happen and what I was in for. Still, I watch this episode and I think I know why I'm having issues with Picard. Star Trek means different things to different people, and instead of coming on here saying "This isn't Star Trek", I think I find that this isn't the Star Trek that I hope for. I came to Star Trek because it inspired, had a hopeful vision of the future, and it was a universe I wanted to live in. Even in darker series like DS9 there was still levity, and thinking that yeah even though the Dominion are a threat this universe is well realized. I watch an episode like Stardust City Rag and I feel the same way I feel about Battlestar Galactica, where it just is depressing and where is the hope and inspiration? Also, I still don't like the Icheb scene at all.

However, after watching City Rag, I saw The Impossible Box and I think that and Napenthe were the best episodes of Picard's first season. There was inspiration, there was hope, and there was a little lightness in the drama. The scenes with Hugh and Picard were very much the Star Trek I came to know and love because while Picard was going through the PTSD, He had the emotional support of Hugh there to help him through it. On this second watch through, I'm finding Picard's need to apologize kind of repetitive, but here in TIB, Hugh and Picard shared an emotional connection that made it much more memorable than the other episodes so far. I think it's one of maybe the top 5 episodes of the Kurtzman era.

Patrick Stewart, playing a Frenchman doing “ze full as you say accent” had to be the most cringe inducing segment in Trek history.

I wouldn't say "the most", but certainly in the top 10... I give you exhibit A:

I preferred it on second watch. Went into it when it aired with very high expectations which unfortunately it didn’t live up to. But now, watching it for what it is, I enjoyed it far more.

The one thing with these super-cereal versions of Trek is they are an easier watch when you can just binge / watch at your leisure.

Picard was definitely a better watch second time round. It really was that one episode and the finale that stunk up the season.

I think I like Picard on the second watch too. I still don't really like the repetitiveness of Picard apologizing in the first few episodes, and I've already said my reservations about Stardust City Rag, but now that we are a few years removed from season 1 and it's not really on the "collective whole's" radar, it is easier to appreciate.

I hope season 2 gives Elnor more of a Character arc. It felt like he was the early TNG Worf in this series, always welding a sword saying "Choose to Live" and playing the warrior stereotype.

I am also a little confused about the whole Absolute Candor thing, since it has been mentioned in Lower Decks a few times.
