Watching order?

Thanks to my appreciation of the new series and the awe and mystery of Netflix, I'm going to try to sample past "Who". I'm going to start at the very beginning with the appropriately titled "Dr. Who: The Beginning" Collection. In what chronological order do the other Wiliam Hartnell DVD sets fall? And, of course, the various Dr.s after that?

A more accurate URL is http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Season_1 and follow the season articles accordingly.

Also, it should be dead easy to figure out the order of the stories because they are numbered -- and the numbers correspond to the story number, not the release number. So The Beginning has stories 1, 2, and 3. The 4th story, Marco Polo, is not on DVD (and likely never will be) - except for a 30-minute reconstruction included in The Beginning - so there is no set #4. Keys of Marinus, which comes out in January, will be set 5, The Aztecs which is out now is #6, and so on. The numbers particularly jump around in the Troughton era since only about 1/3 of the stories survive. And the Lost in Time set (which covers both Hartnell and Troughton) cover a number of stories, too. The numbering system applies to all of the "classic series" DVD releases up to Survival, the last McCoy story. (And the 1996 Paul McGann TV movie will never be released to DVD in North America, so no use waiting for that one).

Similar question for the new series: Is there a suggested order for Sarah Jane/Torchwood/Who?

I'm currently watching TW1/DW3 alternating, while cheating TW1 ahead just a bit so that the endings match up correctly. But I'm a bit stumped as to what to do after this.

Clearly it's going to go DW4/TW2/SJ1 next, but after that I'm not sure. CoE and SJ2 don't really have a Who season to go with, and SJ3 needs to fit in there somewhere as well. Any suggestions?

Apparently questions abound. I'm glad I asked and thanks for the tips about missing episodes and the like. Why no Paul McGann TV movie?

Don't miss out the TV Movie. It's quite a curiosity. Indeed, I'd say it transcends good and bad.

Mostly it transcends bad and into the realm of absolute crap.

Great actor though playing the doctor, great TARDIS interior but really awful everything else..

well you do want to see the Torchwood S1 finale before Doctor Who S3 Utopia

and obviously save Sarah Jane Adventures for after School Reunion.

as for S2 of SJA there is where it gets tricky, should go something like this

Doctor Who: The Poison Sky (S4)
Sarah Jane Adventures: The Last Sontaran (1 & 2)
Torchwood: Exit Wounds (S2)
Doctor Who: The Stolen Earth / Journeys End (S4 finale)
Sarah Jane: Day of the Clown (& the rest of S2)

after than you can watch The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith, as its placement in the Doctors timeline is as best unclear, but normally assumed to be after Planet of the Dead.

Children of Earth sometime after Journeys End as well.

it is annonying both before & after.

All of part 1 was is before Journeys End, also Part 2 up to the six time jump, its the part after the jump that is set after Journeys End.

Another thing worth mentioning is that Torchwood S1 Out of Time, is set at the same christmas as the Runaway Bride. (I think its Out of Time)

No, Mr Smith has a new look in "The Last Sontaran" that's yet to happen in "Journey's End"-- the former takes place after the latter.

if that was the case then why did Luke say that Maria was safe, rather than Rani?

as for Mr Smith, that is what is called a "plot hole"

Obviously because he hasn't met Rani yet - she doesn't appear until "The Day of the Clown". Though that's really got no bearing on the placing of "The Last Sontaran".

but why would Luke mention that Maira was on holiday (somewhere in the south of England) if she was already in the UK.

Also worth remebering that the Daleks are refrenced in a later S2 episode.

That is a complete non-sequitur. I really can't see what you're getting here at all. Maria and her father have gone on holiday - i.e. they're not just across the road, so it's not easy to check that they're safe with the Daleks about to attack. It's just obvious to me that you're meant to watch the episodes in the order they aired on television.

Yeah, all of season 2 is after Journey's End...

ok im going to have to look back to the episodes in questions, find the lines in question, but at the time, it was much talked about that Journeys End was set during the time jump on The Last Sontaran, Maria was taking one last holiday with her mum & dad, before she left for the US with her dad.
