Watching "Obsession" remasterd: Have question?

well according to the man himself he's playing a captain of middle eastern descent so that rules Garrovick out.

I think the film would be well served to show us Kirk before the events mentioned in Concience of the King, and then after. I'm sure he was a much different kid before he left earth for the colony and witnessed the (necessary?) horrors that occurred at the hands of Governor Kodos.
Since a 14-year-old actor has been cast as "Young Kirk", I'd say that there's a possibility you may see something like that.

Edit:

There's also a TrekMovie article.

good casting. something about that kid's eyes and face reminds me of a young Shatner. he (the kid) also looks kinda badass!

Yes, it was recently announced that Tahir will be playing Captain Robau. (thread here) Details about the movie being sketchy as they are, that's about all we know.

"Where No Man" has no reference to the date of Lieutenant Kirk's instructor days, but those have to be after the "Court Martial" event as per his rank, and one would like to say they are before "Obsession" because Kirk there says his first assignment after leaving the Academy was the one aboard the Farragut. We would thus benefit from saying that Kirk stayed at the Academy (and its associated training facilities which may have included starship Republic) as instructor through his Ensign days and some time into his Lieutenantship, before shipping off with Captain Garrovick on the Farragut.

It may be my memory playing tricks on me, but doesn't Kirk actually say that Garrovick was his CO from the day he left the academy? Is it possible that he shipped out with Garrovick on the Republic and later transferred with his captain to the Farragut? And then, after the Cloud Incident, returned to the Academy for post-Graduate studies, ie Command school or some such thing, during which time he taught undergrad courses and met Mictell?

Just my thoughts on the subject. Kirk's background is a bit of a mess to get straight.

your memory was correct..

Yes. He was my commanding officer from the day I left the Academy. One of the finest men I ever knew. I could have killed that thing if I'd fired soon enough the first time.

kirks returning to the academy to teach could have been seen as some type of recovery process after the farragutt attack.

...Although it might also be interesting if young Kirk clung on to Academy assignments because he was afraid to venture into deep space. Perhaps the only reason this timid bookworm ever got his swashbuckling career started was Carol Marcus, all preggies and chanting the dreaded M-word?

Timo Saloniemi

well, no, the character name doesn't have to mean anything. (Look at the captain of the Yorktown during his distress call in ST IV, then remember that character's name was Joel Randolph. Didn't exactly look like the name fit, did it?)

The reason we know it's not Garrovick is because it *is* Robau. ;)

Not to be too nit-picky, but the actor was born Feb. 1996... so he's only 12 now... probably 11 during filming. That may have an affect on the time period in Kirk's life that was mentioned.:vulcan:
Okay, I don't know where I got that number, but you're right -- even the TrekMovie article refers to him as "(almost) 12-year-old actor Jimmy Bennett".

Check it off on your calendar -- that was my one mistake for this year.
