Watching DS9 again and the thing I forgot about Julian

I never understood the banning genetic enhancements argument. I think its based on a 1960's public view of genetics. Considering the things science can do now to embryos without them being turned into future megalomaniacs. Would the audience of the 1960's consider test tube babies 'genetic enhanced' people? The canon in the Star Trek universe is humans can live to 140 years old but look about 90 years old (McCoy in TNG) then something must have happened in that universe for this to be the case.

Khan was a product of eugenics though wasn't he? Rather than genetics? Maybe he's actually a clone of Big Boss......

LOL well the Eugenics war was about super strong (five times as strong as per Memory Alpha) genetic human trying to take over the globe. If I was Khan I would ask my doctor for a refund since the puny humans still beat em!

I mean isn't he not genetically engineered at all so much as bred or screened....different to people like Bashir who had advanced gene therapy done after their birth. Khan would have been born in the 50s or 60s after all. And Eugenics is all selective breeding and odd posh people with horses and Nazis thrown in.

True, but according to DS9 even advanced gene therapy was illegal, hence Mr Bashir Snr went to jail. The whole stigma against it still made no sense to me. I recall the sanctimonious JAG lawyer spouting for every Bashir there might be a Khan waiting in the wings so ban the whole thing. To me that is as crazy as saying stop 20th century Austrians from breeding just in case they produce another Hitler. I just don't get it.

I think because they cure everything else, including using gene therapy, but improving is a different kettle of fish. Jules wasn't broken, he just wasn't perfect, and that's the line that is drawn. Genetic augmentation is not a natural thing, nor is it correcting an actual flaw or illness. It's part of the general federation ethic....theres no competition for resources etc anymore, so being the best you as an individual can be, in whatever you choose, is now a prime motivating factor.
Combine that with a history of unstable engineered nutters trying to take over the world, and yeah, you won't get much credit for the science, especially if it's not needed for anything 'clean'.
