Watching DS9: 1x06 "Q-less"

Jonz

Sorry about the delay. Away on business most of July but i plan to keep this up two episodes a week.

1x06: "Q-less"
Story by: Hannah Louise Shearer
Teleplay by: Robert Hewitt Wolfe
Directed by: Paul Lynch

Synopsis:
When Q and Vash appear on DS9, the superbeing’s familiar antics are overshadowed by those of Jean-Luc Picard’s old flame, when one of her belongings threatens to destroy the station.

Review:
No thanks! If I seemed a little too happy about ”Captive Pursuit” then I may come off as a grumpy old man reviewing this episode.

Firstly I have to comment on the character of Vash. I do not like her one bit. She is annoying and self-centered. I always felt that the writers are going for some kind of Indiana Jones-type lovable rogue with her. It just does not work for me. She is not one bit lovable and I never bought Picard having a romantic interest in her (“Captains Holiday” (TNG) and I certainly do not believe that Q would have one either.

Secondly some words about Q. I like Q! He is a well conceived character and has always been excellently portrayed by John DeLancie in my humble opinion. Usually I will find any Q-centered story to be at least enjoyable but this episode is the worst of the lot I think. This has to do with how the character is used here. Running around stalking Vash takes some of my respect for the ‘omnipotent being’ away. It is simply not plausible to me that Q would see anything in this annoying woman. I guess Q sums the scene up best of all: “How perfectly vile!” – right you are Q!

Considering my reservations about Vash it does not help one bit that we are treated to her manipulating Quark by grabbing his ears and performing oo-mox on him. We know that oo-mox is somehow sexually related. Would it not be comparable to have Vash stroke Sisko’s penis in order to get what she wants? I am not sure, but it amplifies my dislike of her character and hurts the Q-Vash affair even more.

I guess one thing the episode has going for it is the way in which Q realizes that Sisko is not like Picard in any way. This is done in one of the few enjoyable scenes in the episode that ends with Sisko punching Q on the nose. Q’s reaction is priceless and DeLancie plays the scene brilliantly (as usual).

When you combine these point with a throwaway b-plot concerning an artifact from the Gamma Quadrant which is in fact a sentient being trying to get home you get what is - for me - one of the worst DS9 episodes of season one. I understand that the writers needed to present us with familiar faces early on, but the plotting here is just not up to the task.

Some notes:

- The episode's teaser makes for one of the episodes few good scenes. The look on O’Brien’s face as Bashir is bragging is priceless.

- Q on O’Brien: “Oh yes! Weren’t you one of the little people?” – makes me chuckle every time.

Summary:
Q on Deep Space Nine was a failure. And Vash needs to go away! I wish that sentient being would have eaten her before it left. 0.5/4

I pretty much totally agree with you, Jonz. I remember really liking this when it was originally broadcast, and I was 13, but it really doesn't hold up that well to me. The only redeeming scene was Sisko punching Q out.

I just don't get why an omnipotent/scient/whatever deity-like being would desire to hang around ANY mortal, much less a poor shell of a character like Vash. Q likes annoying Picard, but I can't believe he would want to hang out with him for years on end. That seems like it would be the equivalent of an old woman who only socializes with her cats.

Also, the end move where the fancy obelisk is really an alien is a little Farpoint, no?

I think this episode could have been a lot better if Q interacted more with the DS9 crew rather than just having the two guest stars interact with each other while the DS9ers run around with tricorders trying to solve their dilemma.

Oh well! One terrible one so far after six episodes. I think that beats TNG.

Me - 0/4.

I'm not (much) fonder of this episode than most here, and have a few complaints independent of what's eben discussed. Not wild about our heroes playing second fiddle to Vash's story either, but what bothers me more is how stupid they are, showing no deductive reasoning skills at all. I don't have the quote on hand, but Phil Farrand summed it up very well: you have the station showing the same problems as the Ganges. You make a list and figure out what's commmon between the two, and remove them, one at a time, and see if the problem goes away. Not nuclear physics.

The cast are largely misused in general. Bashir as a smooth (rather than wannabe-smooth) ladies' man doesn't suit him. Neither does Quark as an easily manipulated and perpetually horny small-time schemer who's responsible for everything that ever goes wrong. No thanks indeed.

Apparently, I forget if it was de Lancie himself or the crew who was responsible for it, but he's said that he recalls that basically everyone seemed to think that he was the star, and the DS9 gang were the supporting cast. The episode bears that out. Even in a weak outing, though, I'd forgotten how inherently entertaining Q could be, and why his snark was always so refreshing in the straight-laced world of Trek.

I know... that bit makes my skin crawl some, as does any scene involving oo-mox.

As is usual in these threads, my reaction is more neutral than Jonz et al. Too much Q to give it an outright Bad rating. Still, it's the first DS9 episode I'd rank as Weak. (Call it 1.5/4, if you must have a number.)

Best line, from memory: "Picard and his lackeys would've solved all this techno-babble hours ago." - Q, reminding us that even if insulting your whole show is ill-advised, it can be funny

Missing regulars: Lofton (absent in 3/6 episodes so far)

I own the Q Fan Collective DVD set. It's an episode of DS9 I won't be revisiting anytime soon. Avery Brooks appears absolutely bored out of his mind here.

Q-less = Blech! :scream:

2/4. The episode is rather weak, but not unwatchable. A little Q goes a long way for me. I would've rated the ep a tad higher if Sisko would've ripped off that ghastly handlebar moustache...

My vote for the worst Q episode has to go to VOY's "Q2."

It was actually more unwatchable than the equally dreadful "The Q and the Grey."

Bingo! "Q-Less" certainly has its flaws, but it is certainly better than those stinkers.
