Watching Blake's 7 for the first time in ages... and loving it!

As you say, it depends who you speak to, but the only people on the production team who had a say in how it ended and whose comments really count were the producer and the script editor/episode writer - and the latter says he delibberately wrote it so that those actors who signed for another season could be brought back, and those who didn't could be presumed dead without too much fuss, after Jan Chappell's changing availability had caused him headaches at the start of season four.

I think he's got to be treated as the 'authoratitive' (quite literally in this case) source.

What happened with Jan Chappell? I've never read anything about her leaving - just assumed she wanted to move on.

Of course there's lots on Gareth Thomas's final appearance as Blake :)

She'd had a child - either between seasons two and three, or one who'd grown old enough for her to be unhappy about being away from them while making season three, I can't say which for sure - and decided to leave. But exactly when she was going to leave kept changing.
So initially, she was going to do the first shooting block of season four and be written out after that (reading between the lines, Cally would probably have had Dayna's role in Animals, and stayed behind with Justin at the end).
Then she cut her involvement back to one episode, so the scripts were rewritten to fit that. And then it dropped down to doing one scene, and finally to just a voiceover.
By the end of which, Chris Boucher was so sick of doing rewrites that he decided that next year he'd make it easy on himself - big season cliffhanger, and anyone who didn't want to come back didn't survive it.

Given that Animals was such a stinker of an episode she probably dodged a bullet there.

Yeah redeemed only by Vila's sewer adventures

Worst episode of B7 ever??

Probably :)

When Animals was first broadcast on Australian tv, it was Thursday nights. At the time was my sister was in hospital so we went to see her. She was grumpy any my dad pointed out that I'd given up watching Blakes 7 to go and see her.

Murphy's Law of Cult Television: Animals was run while my family was staying with my mother's relatives for a week, and I'd had to persuade them to let me see it rather than whatever they usually watched.
If you have to see an episode with relatives, it'll always be a stinker.

There are quite a few on screen bloopers with Blake's 7. There's a list online somewhere.

Like in Mission to Destiny when Blake breaks the air conditioning unit. Or Vila visible in the teleport area waiting for his cue in Orac. Or Cally getting the number of guards wrong in Volcano. Or...

Travis being replaced by someone else who's desperately failing to keep his face out of camera shot in all the studios scenes for Orac? (Stephen Grief had broken a bone between location filming and the studio work, and couldn't do the latter).

Love this show. I was tempted to watch it with my dad yesterday like we do, but we didn't have a lot of time, and how can you choose just one?! We stick to a rule about watching B7 every ten years or so. The ending is just upsetting and memorable, you need to let it stew a bit before you watch again. After frying my thirty year old taped of pbs vhs, the dvds are worth every penny.

I must ask, what's with all the B7 love recently here? Most people don't know this show exists, which is a dang shame in itself. Is it old sf fans or are newums taking the hint?

Well, it's a sort of cult series, so it's getting mentioned/recommended/praised from time to time, which interests others that haven't heard of it. Like me. A year or so ago, I didn't even know the show existed, then someone said it was better than Doctor Who, so I checked it out and later someone else (soon to be two) into watching it.
