Washington DC in spring

Thanks, Squig, I’ll check the hotel.

Thanks, Digits, et al. We figured one morning in DC, we’d ride (bus or cab) to the Jefferson Memorial and work our way up to the Lincoln Memorial, then across the Mall area to the Washington Monument--stopping at everything on the way. Go somewhere for lunch (already scoping places), and hit a Museum. Old Ebbitt Grill looked interesting, but Central Michel Richard had a nice to-go menu (if the weather’s good). Suggestions for the Washington Monument-ish area?

I’ve already made my requests for Congressional Tours of various places, but won’t get a schedule until March, most likely. My Rep’s office asked if there was anything else they can do to make the trip memorable (we’re actually celebrating 25 yrs together next year; 15 years married this year). Any ideas?

ETA: The Ace Hotel averages $351/night while we’re there--for bunk beds!! I kid you not.

Just remember to bring comfortable shoes and some bottled water. That's a long walk, especially if it's hot.

BTW: When we were there last year, the reflecting pool was empty, being repaired. I assume it's done by now.

About a mile from Jefferson to Lincoln, another mile from there to Washington. Plus the walking around the monuments/memorials themselves. Doable in a morning without rushing, especially with the breaks at the memorials.

I was thinking of getting some water bottles that roll up like a toothpaste tube as they empty. Easy to carry and useful at the airports.

There's deals to be had on NYC hotels, sometimes one day deals. I have enough time to be able to keep an eye out, then jump when it looks good.

It was empty as of last Veteran's Day (the last time I was there).

Another piece of advice: Don't try to walk to the Pentagon/Pentagon City from the Jefferson Memorial. It might seem like it's just across the bridge, but a few hours later you will be stumbling in the dark with bleeding thighs and only the taste of Taco Bell can satiate your hunger.

We’re really looking forward to this.

The DC hotel? I was nervous because of the price. Seems the aaa.com website had a problem--they dropped the “2” and listed $265/night rooms for $65/night! I confirmed with the hotel that $372 for five nights is all we’re paying; aaa.com gets to make up the difference. Evidently not the first time they’ve done that.

The NYC hotel will be near Penn Station, central enough to everything.

Flights and hotels? Check.

Counting down the days.

Reagan (DCA) has the advantage of being "in town" with it's own Metro stop. However, you generally pay for the luxury, with tickets running 25-150 more.

That's a luxury I can live with - I like it when an airport has a subway stop right nearby (Boston also has this). This info will be very helpful to me, as I will also be in DC in September. :)

Yeah. Shame the runways are too short at National.

I will be most pleased when the new Metro line out to Dulles is completed in a few years. It will cut a lot of the travel BS out on my family's end when I arrive and depart.

Very much looking forward to this trip. Not just for the 5 Nats games I will be seeing. :p As I said, last time I was so bummed out by the heat wave that I didn't bother exploring as much as I should have.. But this time I will come prepared for any weather eventuality.
