Was this intentional? (SCE/TNG query)

I just watched TNG's Conundrum, in which we meet Commander Keiran MacDuff. Now, immediately I thought, this is where they got the character of Duffy from for SCE, but it turns out that Duffy is actually another character - again from TNG, but TNG didn't give him a forename.

So, there was me thinking "Oh how clever of the writers, they took a fake Starfleet officer and suggested that the identity was based on a real person, just in case!" But no... they just have the same first name and similar surnames.

My question is, when the writers created the forename Keiran for Duffy (in SCE), were you aware of the similarity to Commander MacDuff from Conundrum? Or is this pure coincidence?

It was pure coinky-dink. I was the one who came up with the first name of Kieran for the character of Duffy from "Hollow Pursuits." I thought the name sounded good -- probably because I'd heard it in "Conundrum."

I'm so glad you put it that way, because last time I speculated such a thing here (and had thought I'd remembered reading a similar response from you before that) I got told off by several people for daring to attempt to read the mind of the great and powerful KRAD.

You were told off by me because you made a declarative statement that I absolutely was riffing on the name from "Conundrum," which I'd never said, and which I'm only saying I might have subconsciously done in hindsight. But my reasons for choosing the name were actually personal, but the fact that I'd heard "Kieran MacDuff" probably helped make it sound better in my head.
