Was there a TNG lead in episode for DS9

Well, the episode The Wounded sets up the Cardassians, and the episode Ensign Ro gave us the Bajorans, but I don't recall anything specifically setting up the situation with Starfleet taking over the station until the first episode of DSN.

There isn't anything that sets up the station, but Chain of Command Parts 1 & 2 portrays itself as a lead-in to the events where DS9 begins, with tensions flaring up between the Federation and the Cardassians following the latter's withdrawal from the Bajorian system.

A lot of episodes set up the situation in DS9. The Wounded and Ensign Ro set up the main premise, Best of Both Worlds set up Sisko's situation. The only direct advertising of DS9 they did though was Birthright, after it had already started.

And also aired just before DS9 premiered, so that's as big a lead-in as you're gonna get. :)
Exactly. The closest thing to a lead-in was: "Chain of Command," Parts I & II.

"The Best of Both Worlds, Part II" aired over two years earlier, with many episodes afterwards and before DS9, which means it was not remotely a "lead-in," just as "Space Seed" was not a lead-in to The Wrath of Khan.

The reference to Bajor is so fleeting that I'm sure it went right a lot of people watching. However, whether it was by design or not, Chain of Command also helps remind the audience who the heck the Cardassians even are, as they only appeared in two episodes prior and are obviously a huge part of DS9.

It should be noted that the Ferengi in "Chain of Command" was suppose to have been Quark.

More on this from Memory Alpha [https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Chain_of_Command,_Part_I_(episode)]:

  • DaiMon Solok was originally intended to be Quark in a crossover with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The decision to show DS9's pilot "Emissary" in January 1993 meant that this was changed, as people would be unaware who Quark actually was. The scene in the bar with Solok was filmed on DS9's Replimat set, although filmed at tight angles to hide this fact. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion)
  • Rene Echevarria elaborated on the planned TNG/DS9 crossover thusly: " We were going to go to DS9 and that's how we were going to get to the planet in the show. The Enterprise was going to come to DS9 and get a ship. The scene with the Ferengi was written for Quark and I don't think Ron [Moore] changed a word except the guys name. We were going to borrow one of their runabouts which Jellico was going to ask for, but it just didn't work out. Rick [Berman] wanted to wait a little longer before doing a crossover. Actually, it was less expensive, because if you go to Deep Space 9 you have to use at least one of their regulars". (Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages, page 267)

It might have been fun if they'd still used Quark, but prior to the events of DS9's pilot episode. A kind of 'early cameo', if you will.

Did the Maquis storyline begin with TNG or DS9?
On season 7 of TNG there was Maquis activity going on and one crew member joined them.
Also, I remember seeing one Cardassian, Gul Evek on TNG and DS9 talking about Maquis situation.
Evek was in one episode of Voyager too.

I think the only legit mention of the Marquis on TNG was Preemptive Strike, which was after they were established in the season 2 DS9 two-parter about them. Although the seeds of dissent had been planted here & there on TNG, over the years, especially the Dorvan V resettlement in Journey's End

Finagle is a great word :)

It always amused me that the Maquis were conceived for Voyager, but it was only on DS9 that they ended up actually doing anything with them while the Maquis on VOY might as well have just been Starfleet all along for all the difference it made

And he was also suppose to show up years later on the Ba’ku planet in “Star Trek Insurrection”. But aside from the one episode with the Duras sisters (which didn’t make a lot of sense—-why are you piping a Starfleet call down to the civilian barkeep?), Quark never did crossover.
