Was the drill necessary? (spoilers)

Was it that hard for earth or vulcan to send some small ships to destroy the tether like the jellyfish did.
 
Of course he needed the drill. He had to use a process that took half a day to complete so the Enterprise could show up in time to stop it! And have fight scenes and stuff...

Agreed. There's a bunch of different elements that are closer down to a planet's core that would be hard to get at without a giant space drill; I imagine it would also be helpful for getting to the center of asteroids and such. It makes sense as a weapon that Nero would have at his command, and as a weapon that do some massive damage.
 
The drill imo was a bit exaggerated and unnecessary.. But it helped built up the feeling of panic during the action scenes in particular when Kirk and Sulu was fighting hand to hand with the romulans on the drill itself...
 
Perhaps it needed all that density and mass at the centre of a planet to really grow into a monster black hole capable of tearing it up.
