Was that one black chick a better helmsman than Wes?

Is it Ensign Gates that you are referring to? Or Ensign Sariel Rager? I believe it may be the former/

In the real world, it's the difference between having an extra who isn't being paid to speak and a regular castmember who's drawing a check to yak his head off.

Still, you're right, pretty neat manouvre. :)

Yeah, but they could've shown SOME skill in Wes' piloting.

And, Ensign Gates that's her.

bzzzt ;)

Ensign Gates, is pictured here...from season five's Darmok.

(She was played by Joyce Robinson and appeared in another 32 episodes...mainly as background filler in 10 Forward)

THIS is Ensign Sariel Rager, from season six's Relics

She also appeared in 3 other episodes Galaxy's Child, Night Terrors, and Schisms
(Played by Lanei Chapman)

I'm not really sure if that makes her a great pilot - I mean, who *wouldn't* have done that if they had been in her situation? Wasn't she just doing her job?

But she did it rapidly and instinctively! I've never seen that from Wesley.

In all Trekkness, that shows the difference between someone who may be very smart and knowledgable, and a Starfleet officer who has been fully trained in the academy, and has years of actual experience.

I remember this sequence, and very cool it was.

It could have seemed a bit of a ripoff of the Millennium Falcon escaping the Death Star (or was it the asteroid monster), but the nifty bit of panel tapping made it different enough to seem fresh and exciting.

The helm of that Enterprise seemed fairly idiot proof, Picard never seem to place any importance on it at all. He let whoever was on the bridge helm his ship. That always bothered me. I imagined a big go button and a big stop button.

types on her panel (wihtout being directed to) and we see the ship roll 90* and make it out the doors!

It's one of my favourite TNG moments. Ensign Reager is so cool! :D

I think that's it. The actress knew her useless panel well. :)

Though, in "reality" I would think such a maneuver wouldn't require so many button taps. Just a twirl of the finger along the "joypad" icon on the screen.

She knew how to build her part up! :D

Yeah, the girl totally outruled Wes! :p But then again, there weren't too many tough situations for Enterprise ("Relics" of course, and some others, but very few).
Still, I'm in favor of the girl! ;)

If it ain't a blind guy, a kid, or a woman who isn't qualified and has an accident on her record...they ain't Picard's pilot!

Is the "black chick" in question the same one who won the Amazing Race?

Um ..., 'scuse me, but I have to ask: are you serious? One of those women who played the TNG E-D helmswoman was later on Amazing Race? Seriously?

Cuz if that's true -- and big Trek geek that I am -- I didn't recognize her ...? My husband is never gonna let me live it down. :borg:

*EDIT* Oh God. I just Googled and IMDB'd her, and it's true. I hate, Hate, HATE all these freakin' "reality shows", but that's the one show he's been able to get me to watch, and I -- of all people -- didn't recognize her.

Please, no one say a word. I'll be in the dog house forever for this one. :scream:

Wasn't one of them an astronaut, or am I really off?

You're really off ;)

Of the myriad of black female background characters in TNG, astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison was a transporter operator in season 6's "Second Chances"
