Was pretty excited for this show.. but ultimately underwhelmed...

I still think the whole Vulcan/Romulan Cylon thing was a good fan wank theory that would have made the whole katra thing make sense and add more weight to that story. But other than that, I enjoyed Picard mostly. It was cool to explore the world outside of Federation space, rather than getting glimpses of it from onboard Starfleet flagships. My only big disappointment was that, despite talking about it being more cerebral, they still managed to fit in a galaxy wide threat which really wasn't necessary. I mean, imply it, mention it and theorise about it, but why have that in season 1? Kurtzman really seems to have issues when it comes to stakes.

I see what you are saying, Phily B. I agree that the writers made it seem that it was more of a galaxy wide threat. Yet, it was self contained.

Wouldn't that fall on Chabon?

Who knows, he was clearly operating as a team looking at his Instagram.
Fair enough.

I'll probably be the outlier when I say that the states don't matter to me, high or low. If I'm invested in the characters then it works.

Mileage and all that jazz.

Again, I guess I'm just used to it, I mean Buffy saved the world at the end of every season. The superhero shows fight the end the world all the time. Flash end of season 1 faced a world ending black hole.

Stargate, Farscape, Indiana Jones, and the Star Trek films all pretty much got me there. I get that it's not for everyone but I don't think there is just one way to write a Star Trek story.

Yes, true. But there were some episodes that Buffy was tempted to the darkside because of her boyfriend.

I see. That is really something. I will have to check out the Turnabout Intruder and Distant Voices, Fireproof.

That sounds good to me, The Old Mixer. I guess it makes sense in a while that Picard would become an android since Picard defended Data in the Measure of a Man ST:TNG episode.

I agree with you about this. Yes.

That is interesting.

Sorry about that, The Old Mixer. I don't want to be put in the Brig.

I but there are certain in universe rules. Star Trek now feels like any other dark themed sci fi show. There really isn’t any hope in that universe. The only bright spot in kurtzman trek has been pike. If they can write him the humanity was supposed to be portrayed in roddenberrys 23rd century I’ll finally be on board but I’m doubting their ability to do it.

Mileage varies now. I love Picard and Burnham and they give me hope. I see nothing darker than has been in Trek before.

Lower Decks has the heart of Trek, and I'm hoping Strange New Worlds will be a similar return to form.

Some thoughts:

1. The Romulan Cylon thing would have made the thing even more like Battlestar Galactica and also been something that the Federation would have figured out centuries ago I think. I mean, either they have organic brains or they don't.

2. I think that the biggest problem of the series is actually a very minor one in that it had too much backstory to get through and the show should have had 13 episodes rather than trying to ape Game of Thrones. The first 2 episodes should have been Picard w/ the refugees and Attack on Mars so we can see his fall from grace.

3. I think this is no more violent and dark a movie than Star Trek: Nemesis or the other action orientated Trek films. It also ends up in an optimistic upbeat note where everything is awesome.

I think it's significantly brighter than Discovery and reflects an optimistic beautiful future. It's why Picard is primarily in Romulan Space so there's a story to tell.

Exactly. Dark is what O'Brien goes through often both in TNG and DS9.

Of course there are dark moments IlAll of trek has has those but there was a hope always underlying it. I don’t feel that with this new trek. Humanity in kurtzman trek seems to close to 20th and 21st century humans. The style of storytelling being used is what has become popular since shows like Breaking Bad. The shades of grey story telling of the main characters. Pike has broken this trend in disc so we’ll see if that changes things. But I think the writers of today think there are no pure characters and like to add shock value when a supposedly good character does something bad right out of the blue.
