I thought he exhibited more of those traits after he met Kirk.
Kirk: Never let them get you off of that bridge.
Picard: Get off the bridge more often. Got it.
Kirk: [sotto voce] Might as well fall off a bridge.

He was certainty way more fit than Frakes was by that time.Come now, surely you aren't saying Picard is not fit enough to lead an insurrection against swarms of enemies? lol
The TNG movie formula did not serve PS well. And the odd thing is he kept pushing for things that I feel were not in his best interest! More action/dune buggy/physical stuff, instead of insisting on crafting more intelligent scripts.
It didn't serve Captain Picard very well. It served Patrick Stewart very well.
Well he isn't being paid to play Captain Picard anymore, so I guess you are wrong.
That's actually true for First Contact. The TNG movies felt to me like they wrote the scripts, then decided to switch all of Rikers activities with Picards.
In 'First Contact', i could accept that given Picards history with the Borg. Even still though it seemed far more suited to Picards particular character to be the one on the ground encouraging Cochrane to live up to his legend, while Riker kicked arse in orbit.
Yes, it's fair. But I'm more interested in drama than action, which probably isn't true of most of the demographic they're aiming at.
I always thought of that as being Riker's job.
