Was Joseph Carey hitting on 7 of 9?

Is anyone so married so as not be giddidy and mildly flirtatious in the presense of Jeri Ryan?

I'd be impressed at the self control of any married man that wouldn't show signs of attraction to her while she prances around in that body suit.

Perhaps. But Joe, being the married man he was, still had the choice to hit on her or not.

Sure, Seven's hot and everyone knows it, but then why didn't Joe just excuse himself and leave? He could have placed his marriage higher on his priorities than we saw him do.

There's every chance that he was bringing her for the wife "eventually".

there was a sex and the City all about how Samantha was constantly being propositioned for threesomes.

Then conversely there's also a chance that Joe is a serial killer and sex wasn't on the menu for their date.

HA!

Picardo is on Supernatural as a UFO Hunter!

Fantastic.

Maybe he and his wife are swingers? With the definition of marriage these days not being traditional and that institution's standards of acceptability or normality no doubt further evolving in the next several hundred years, who's to say what future marital priorities are?

I honestly don't remember him acting inappropriately or that he was married in that timeframe. Another thing to consider is, were all the instances of Carey from the same quantum reality or had the future changed somewhat where he was married in one instance but not another. It is hard to judge the guy with the amount of information available.

AFAIK, all the times we have ever actually seen Carey, were from the 'regular' timeline. (There have been alternate timelines which mentioned him, usually getting him killed off, but none of those discussed his marital status. In any case, I think those timelines all branched off well after the start of the show, and so he would have been married in all of them.)

If you're suggesting that Carey was not yet married when he hit on 'Anna', but got married sometime in between then and the launch of the ship, I suppose that's possible. I don't know how much time was supposed to have passed between those two instances.

It's also possible that Carey and his wife simply had had a fight and that he thought she was going to dump him, so therefore he hit on 'Anna' because he was distraught. It's certainly as likely as the "swinger" version. (honestly, have we ever actually seen a relationship like that in Trek that didn't involve Phlox?)

The classic line form friends... "WE WERE ON A BREAK!"?

From friendship one...

(all wearing environment suits in driving snow)
PARIS: I should have brought a holo-camera so I could show B'Elanna she's not missing anything. Can you believe she actually wanted to come with us?
CAREY: When my wife was pregnant she didn't want to be coddled, either.
PARIS: And she's not half Klingon. Maybe it's us. Something about fatherhood seems to regress the male psyche a few thousand years. (picks up small round object)
.
And prime factors...

SESKA: B'Elanna, right now our people are still fighting Cardassians, dying for our cause. Settlers in the demilitarised zone are still under attack. We made a promise, B'Elanna, that we'd all stick together until the Zone was safe, and I intend to keep that promise.
CAREY: I have a wife, and two little boys. I don't want them to grow up without a father. I'd do anything to prevent that.
SESKA: We're not the only ones. Everyone wants to get back. They're just waiting for someone to act.

..because there's nothing wrong with looking at the menu as long as you don't eat from it. Sometimes having coffee with a co-worker is just having coffee with a co-worker.

^ But is that really all that Carey intended? Look at the scene again....
Intentions to cheat are usually done as a covert thing.
He didn't ask her for a meal in his quarters or somewhere out from the prying eyes of his staff and co-workers, he asked for it in the mess hall in full view of all the staff. In front of people who could have easily told his wife if his intentions were anything more. You would do that to not misconstrue intentions as anything more. If he was looking for more he'd invite her to a place where nobody knew either of them.

Good point.

"Hey babe I got some hot salami in my pants... Do you want to suck it?"

Men can't be direct anymore.

It's not the 70s.

(Oh, it is the 70s on Voyager.)

It's insulting to be direct, unless she's direct first, and even then, some men can still be insulted becuase deep down they're women.

If men want to have sex they have to lie and lie and lie.

If Men want to have sex again (with the same woman.. Wait, that can't be right?) they have to apologise for lying, or lie that they were surprised that the sex happened, or lie and lie some more until there's such a healthy web of lies strung up around her that we men can rest on all the old lies and get on with doing what she says until she is in the mood, because she's finally in a safe, happy secure environment and her asshole detector is turned off, that as a man you're in a position where you can just ask for sex without spending 200 dollars on dinner and listening to her talk for hours about her awful family.

I'm not saying women are ignorant, because their part of "this" game is to (briefly)pretend to believe the lies, because although women are not easily jimmied slot machines, they are complex individuals who don't want to be abused even while they're balancing their own needs that unfortunately sometimes requires, dear god, a man.

Sometime "Coffee" is just "Coffee" but if we must go all the way back to When Harry Met Sally: "why would a man want to be friends with a woman he didn't want to have sex with?"

Besides.

Joe is married.

His wife would remove his balls if he had coffee with Anika.

Even if it really was coffee, and he was just innocently making a work connection with a colleague, the wife would still remove his balls and he would never see his children again.

Making a work connection with a colleague is not worth losing your balls.

Which means that Joe had more invested in that coffee than a coffee or he's thick as pigshit.

^^Considering how ugly Billy Crystal is, a man would want to be friends with a woman he couldn't have sex with to make all the other guys jealous of course.

Look at Neelix and Kes.
How many folks thought: "What the hell does she see in him?"
Doesn't matter if he was actually hitting it or not, folks still thought he was and that made him feel like a big man.

Oh? The Ducky clause.

There's no glory there.

It's not a defensible position.

Millhouse said it best to Lisa "that's right, just think of me as the best big sister ever!"

It's not an in.

You just become a friend they confide the details of their sexlife with other men to.

Almost enough to make one walk into traffic.

Millhouse and Ducky are nerds with no game.

A real dude knows if a can't hit it with her, hot women will have hot friends and will get in good with her to run his game on them.

Trickle down theory?

Now, that's something I can believe in.

Although it does draw a weird line between BFF and Pimp perhaps?

More alarmingly perhaps. Joe Carey wants to see "Anna" in the mess hall, when the Mess Hall wasn't there til Neelix decided he needed to be the cook...

The mess hall was there. The galley wasn't.

I've just started rewatching VOY (and shocked how 'bad' it is :vulcan:) and was surprised when Janeway tells Neelix in one of early episodes that it was the captain's dining room! I thought, wtf, that's pretty luxurious for a small ship. Or did she mean the galley area, in which case it would be ridiculously small. Either way, it's not clear.

Neelix's kitchen was originally the Captians private dining hall.

Replicator rationing meant that they had to eat the food they grew in the cargo bay if they wanted to save up surplus rations for something else, or they've already run out for the month.
