Was Jadzia dull ?

Thrall said:
One of the most overlooked things of the show was her sisterhood with Kira. There had never really been a pair of girlfriends laughing it up and talking about boys on a Trek show before or since. People always talk about O'Brien and Bashir but always forget this one.

There was that revolting girlyish nonsense between Crusher and Troi, which mostly constituted two otherwise intelligent women tittering and giggling about what the boys were up to. Blah... I spit with disgust at puerile 1980s chauvinism. By comparison, the friendly sparring between Dax and Kira was much more palatable. Recall the comments made by Kira when Dax talks of her upcoming date with a fella with a transparent skull.

Jadzia the character had huge potential in a more demanding role, so I agree with Dizzyman. But the only way for that to happen would be to make her second in command, and the writers would have had to ditch her "old man" previous friendship with Sisko to avoid it looking like a club or clique at the top. Besides, the context required a Bajoran in that role.

I also agree with Exodus that Jadzia is basically the Trek wet dream, not just in terms of erotica (although I would quite happily be stranded on a desert island with a refrigeration plant, supply of cool beverages, in-door plumbing and a tall brunette like Farrell ;-) but in terms of achieving one's potential, which is a large part of what Trek is about. Exploration, gathering experiences, gaining knowledge and from all that, wisdom and ultimately enlightenment. Dax is definately enlightened, and every successive host is further down the curve as a result.

It's possible that Farrell didn't have the goods to take the character very far, whether or not the writers had been inclined, but we can't know that. We can't prove the negative, so we should refrain from disparaging the abilities of an actor who held down a main role on a very popular show from one of, if not the, most successful and biggest grossing TV and cinema franchises in history, that has had a fundamental influence on global popular culture and will continue to do so for many years yet. When you've done as much, then you'll be in a position to criticise Farrell's work.

Yeah, because the writers usually don't bother giving them any character besides their boobs.

It occured to me that I forgot to mention something earlier. If Dax is the ultimate goal, yet we still think that as a character, Dax is dull, then that tells us something. It says that while we appreciate that Dax has achieved the ultimate Trek goal, she is dull television and what we really want to see on our screens, whether we're watching contemporary or speculative fiction, is characters with flaws who get into arguments. Not characters who are serene, confident, in control and in possession of more wisdom than their years.

With age and experance comes great wisdom as well as inner peace. As a great many people get older, they learn to get over their flaws and not to worry about trivial issues. Jadzia even told us that after having seven lifetimes of experance the stuff others worry about don't concern her.

I know myself as I get older(nearing 40), things that I worried about in my 20's or even early 30's don't seem like a big deal anymore. You refocus your priorities. People with flaws don't argue, only ones that are insecure or who are emotional hurt do IMO.

Jadzia was emotionally sound, she had no reason to be angry or argue. Thanks to Dax, Jadzia was emotionally & meantally well over 100 years old. Picard was also mentally close to Dax' mind set, he also had flaws but wasn't angry or argued either. Picard like Dax, had wisdom on his side.

I like Jadzia, she was cool and intelligent, composed but still knew how to party and just enjoy life...and, to be honest I think Ezri is kind of a ninny.

I thought Jadzia's death was a sad thing.

But then again, a woman's looks will never be the reason I like a character or not. To me, both Nicole and Terry are pretty. But they could look like toads for all I care. :)

I guess that's why all their male & female counterparts sought them out for their intelligence and their wisdom. Sisko, Janeway & Archer all relied heavily on all three of them for those reasons.

Male Trek fans also out number female ones. The writers are aware of who their audience is.

I'm going to go outside Trek for a quick counterargument here: in the web comic strip Ozy and Millie
, Ozy -- a young wolf -- and his father Llwellyn -- a dragon -- are serene, confident, controlled characters possessing more wisdom than their years, and yet they're fascinating people. One could claim that's because they interact with so many chaotic people, but the healthy number of strips that's simply their interaction together show that's not so.

Maturity isn't boring; not having anything interesting to say is boring.

(Disclaimer: I have known the cartoonist behind Ozy and Millie for something like twelve years, although I have no regular contact or input on the strip or the artist's other projects.)

Yeah, at first. I don't think either terry Farrell or the writers really had a clue of what to do with the character, or how. Later on, she really picked up IMO due to the addition of Worf into the mix. Her relationship played well off her already established klingon experiences (i.e. "Blood Oath", etc.).

I also think Jadzia & Worf playing off each other made us see Worf as more than just a Klingon, he made us see him as a noble man. You saw passed his culture and heritage finally and got to know Worf more as a person.

She was way too dull for a character who is a merged being, one of whom is centuries old and has lived several lifetimes! How can you not take that and turn the character into a fascinating scene stealer?

It was partly Terry Ferrell's fault but also I blame the writers. They never much tried with Jadzia. They seemed more inspired by actors who they knew could really knock it out of the park. That's how Weyoun and Damar ended up becoming major characters.

Ezri wasn't much better. In fact, I liked her even less. Jadzia and Ezri are at the bottom of my Favorite Characters list, with Jake.

The character of Jadzia came across as extremely arrogant, she acted like she was the best person in the universe because she had 300 years worth of memorys, in one Jem'Hadar episode she told a Jem'Hadar soldier she 'stopped counting her age at 300' to which he replied 'you dont look it', how arrogant is that to tell someone you're 300 when you're not, she only had memories of other people, not only was she arrogant that way she seemed to think she was a super skilled Klingon warrior when she regularly got her ass handed to her by the lowest of the low. Worst of all theres the fact that everytime someone came on the station that she'd met before in a bar for maybe about half an hour 3 years previous she made out to be best friends with them and had a giggle with them as though she was well known by them, an example being when Tom Riker came onboard when he pretended to be Will Riker, she apparently only met him about a year ago for one hour at the dabo wheel and shes like 'hey there will, its me Dax!! woot woot! remember me!!', I cant help but shout at the TV 'pull your neck in you arrogant twat and mind your own business'.
THEN theres her vanity, she seemed to think she was the bees knees and was the best looking woman in the universe, she would regularly flirt with all the men and whoever she got attention off she would wrap them around her finger and mess them around, like Julian for example

She was THE worst and most annoying character in the whole of Trek, I couldnt stand her, I could stand wesley Crusher more than I could stand her.

Did I mention that 'Tears of the Prophets' is one of my favourite DS9 episodes. ;)

No, I find bland characters dull. Is there a correlation? Probably. Arguably some actresses were chosen based on some attributes (attractiveness) and not others (talent). But in the interests of fairness, I'm not a big Neelix fan either.

And I thought Seven was one of VOY's better characters, actually.

There were certainly times when I though she was the ONLY character on VOY actually. ;)
(Enough of the VOY bashing, alright. :D )

I actually never found Jadzia, Seven of Nine or T'Pol attractive yet I was quite fond of the 7of9 and T'pol characters, its just Jadzias that I couldnt stand and to be honest even though I didnt find none of them attractive Terry Farrel isnt even in the same league as Jeri Ryan or Jolene Blalock on the good looking scale.

Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. Look, I never found Jolene Blalock or Jeri Ryan particularly attractive. But Mrs. Farrel ...
