Was it better the second time?

For each series was it better the second time you watched either again on TV or on DVD? For me going back to watch all of Trek on DVD was sometimes better and sometimes worse.

TOS - I cannot really say when I watched it a second time on TV but a couple years ago I bought the series on DVD. I had a harder time getting through it than I expected.

TNG - The first time I was so happy to have Trek again I liked everything even though I knew some of it was bad. I enjoyed watching it through on DVD, but not as much as I enjoyed watching it the first time. I liked Riker better on DVD.

DS9 - I never got to watch it in order on TV though I saw most episodes. While watching it through on DVD I was surprised how much I like the secondary characters. Overall it was better the second time around. So good that I found myself watching up to 4 episodes a night.

VOY - Just about to watch it on DVD so no opinion yet. I hope it is better on DVD.

ENT - The first time I was close to ST burnout and very intollerant. When it started on SciFi I watched and liked it after having a break from trek. I bought the series on DVD and liked it enough that I started buying the other series on DVD and watching them one at a time.

In Short:

TOS - Worse
TNG - Not quite as good
DS9 - Better
VOY - Will know in a couple months.
ENT - Much better than the first time.

ENT - Much better than the first time.

Star Trek - Like sex and chocolate: it never gets old!

The Next Generation - Hasn't aged well at all when compared to its' predecessor. I think on DVD I came to the realization that I was more in love with the tech and uniforms than the series itself.

Deep Space Nine - Never finished it when it was on the air, have viewed very few episodes on DVD.

Voyager - See Deep Space Nine.

Enterprise - This is the one that suprised me. Seemed much better the second time around on DVD. Probably because I was able to skip so much of the crap they produced and focus on the gems.

DS9 was the one that seemed to get better every time. It's probably why I'm more of a fan as overall it was great.

Voyager... some I can rewatch but overall I see too many things that annoy me. TOS I've watched way too much when I was younger, I'd have to re-do that show before I'm 30.

Enterprise, as been said, was a surprise. Still not great, but a little better the second time round with the later seasons.

TNG.. second (and third and fourth etc) viewings pretty much put me off the show.

I just purchased the 3rd season of TOS on the re-mastered DVDs w/the new CGI fx so, it was kinda like seeing it for the first time...again. I really enjoyed seeing a fresh spin on an old classic. For the first time EVER, I actually own the entire series of TOS,TNG & TAS & I'm NOT disappointed one bit.

I wasn't even into TOS when it hit the peak of its' popularity in 1970s syndication. The ONLY reason I even watched it was because the local station aired it after "Space:1999", which remains my favorite sci-fi series. Sure, I saw some episodes when they were on NBC (I was between the ages of 4 & 7) because my Dad's a fan. So, I was a late bloomer.

Got tired of DS9 by the third season & gave up. VOY used the Kazon WAAAAY too much for my taste so, I quit that one as well. As far as ENT? Watched the pilot & never went back. Paramount practically killed the frachise. Thank God they turned it over to someone who gave it a new spin (JJ Abrams) which was long overdue.

I may give the last three series another look when Blu-Ray becomes more popular & everyone's trying to get rid of the soon-to-be-outdated DVD format.

I'm finding TNG better this time 'round, although its been more than twice that i've gone through the series. The NuTrek movie really reignited my passion for all things Trek.

TOS - Better
TNG - Better but worse for seasons one and two
DS9 - Much better
VOY - As bad as it's always been.
ENT - About the same
Movies - About the same, although I've developed greater appreciations for TMP and V over the years.

:techman:

TOS- better EVERY TIME. EVERY TIME.:bolian:
TNG- better the first time, but still great.
DS9- better the second time.
VOY- mixed bag; DVD is great 'cause you can skip the boring eps.;)
ENT- better the first time. *yawn*

It was better the second time I watched all the series on DVD because I watched everything from start to finish, but the first time I didnt watch all the episodes in order.

TOS - great the first time and every subsequent time.

TNG - really bad the first time and every subsequent time too.

DS9 - really bad the first time but I tuned out after the pilot. The pilot remains just as bad on subsequent times, but the series became great when it dealt with other things moreso than Bajorans/wormhole aliens. I suppose the non-Bajoran, non-wormhole-aliens parts of the series were just as great the first time too.

VOY - really bad the first time and every subsequent time too.

ENT - really bad the first time but I tuned out in Season 1, I presume it would be just as bad in subsequent times.

TOS- I would love to buy the remastered episodes, when they come down in price. Like fine wine, it gets better with age.

TNG- I have recorded a few of my favorite episodes. I have no desire to own the whole set. Perhaps now that SyFy will stop airing it, I may one day buy them off the cheap rack.

DS9- Nothing could persuade me to spend money on it. The only episode I recorded is the Roswell with the Ferengi.

VOY- I love the opening score... that's a good thing... right?.. and... and... Harry Kim is really cute... right?

ENT- SyFy airings have helped me grow to like this series... perhaps more than any except TOS. Perhaps one day I may buy the series.

MOVIES- I WILL be getting the new Star Trek for Christmas. I already own the others (even TFF & NEM, only because I could not break up the set!).

TOS: I never tired of the series, so it's still as good as it ever was.

TAS: Mixed. I didn't get to see it for years (hell, decades) after my initial viewing, so it's the one series that I really noticed how my perception had changed. There was a lot there that I didn't appreciate as a kid, but I also forgot just how bad some of the episodes were.

TNG: I may have enjoyed it more the second time around, but by the sixth or seventh, I noticed that I spent more time nitpicking and less time enjoying the episodes. A definite case of overkill.

DS9: Still one of my favorite series, but the serialized nature of the show made watching it in repeats a little less enjoyable. In subsequent viewings, I found myself enjoying the early seasons more than the later seasons.

VOY: Another mixed bag. Some episodes I appreciated more, but others I came to loathe.

ENT: Still not my cup of tea, but better the second time around.

Movies: Some I thought were better, some I thought were worse. TMP is the one that I've come to appreciate more over time. First Contact: Not so much.

I've heard the same thought from a few people - the remastered discs are definatly on my must have list. When I have spare pennies to spend.

The amount of times I've seen FC, I can't enjoy it as much as I did but I haven't went off it as much other others here.

With TMP... I used to find it too slow and it aged badly, but when I watched the Directors Edition I seemed to enjoy it a lot more. I mentioned more detail on it here

TOS
I originally watched -- thanks to bad time-slots, shifting time-slots, and going on and off the air -- from 1991-1996, and it took that long to catch all the episodes. My interest in the series resurged around 2000-2001 and I liked it even more than I did the first time.

I purchased the series on DVD from 2004-2006, which you can call the third time, but I haven't watch too many of the episodes. My interest in TOS tapered off and fizzled out around 2006. Maybe this had more to do my feeling like I discussed TOS to death on TrekBBS by the time I got to that point.

TNG
I originally watch this also from 1991-1996 except, unlike TOS, with more regularity. I always preferred TOS to TNG. I bought the first and third seasons on DVD in 2002. I liked the third season more this time and the first season less. I never bought the rest of the series. I watched a few random episodes over the years on Spike and Sci-Fi and my opinion of those episodes was the same as it was in the '90s.

DS9
I originally watched this as it aired. When they strip-syndicated DS9 in the late-'90s, I appreciated the first two seasons more than I did at the beginning. I bought the series on DVD from 2003-2004, and my opinion of the series was about the same as it was five years earlier.

VOY
This series, unlike any of the others, was one I volley-balled between. I alternately liked and disliked the series, depending on the episode. By the fifth season, "dislike" was overwhelming "like" and I stopped watching at the beginning of the sixth season. I watched the entire series over in 2008 (and the sixth and seventh seasons for the first time) -- except "Threshold". My opinion of the overall series has improved now that I know what to expect from each episode. The fifth season, the one that turned me off from any new Star Trek until JJ Abram's movie, came off better than it did 10 years ago.

ENT
Forget about the second time, I have to watch most of the series a first time.

Movies
My opinions of them haven't really changed over time, except that I don't fawn over them as much as I did when I was a tween/teen. A decade or two can do that to your taste in film.

Well to me its kind of hard to say with each one, but I'll try.

TOS: I wasn't even born yet when it first aired on tv, I wasn't born until 1979 so how would I know. But what do remmber is on tv they showed re-runs back in the 80's when I was kid. That was the first time I ever saw and heard of Star Trek. I remmber watching it on tv just because it was on. I didn't think much about back then. But I did grew into liking it after I seen it on tv many times. As I got older, I liked it but didnt really get into it until a lot latter in life. But now after seeing the new movie, it really got me back into watching the series again after many years of not watching it. So now I really love the series, its like I'm a kid again and watching it for the first time. The show has now become one of my very favorites! I have now the 1st Season on blu ray and plan on getting Season 2 when it comes out on blu ray. I just love how they have the option to choose between the orginal and enchaned. I just love the show even more! I even watch the reruns on tv when its on. I even have bought quite bit of the episodes for my iPhone!

TNG: I'm not exactaly sure when the first time I seen the show, other than I remmber seeing it on tv when I was kid. I kind of at first had a oppion about this show like I did with TOS, but grew into liking it just like TOS. After seeing the show over the years I grew into liking it, and for a while I liked it better than TOS. But since the new movie came out I got into liking TOS and falling in love with that show all over again. But I still do love and like this show just like TOS, so now they are both my favorites of Star Trek, and my oppion, the very best shows and movies of all Star Trek! I'm thinking if the series is released on blu ray like TOS, I plan on buying all seaons. I do watch the reruns on Sci Fi when its on though.

DS9: I'm not sure when I saw this show the first time. But I do remmber watching it on tv many times when it was on tv. I never really cared for this show, not even from the begaing. I never thought this show was as good as TOS and TNG, so I never cared for it much. Everytime it was on tv, I got bored watching it. So I say this show was the worse of all the Star Trek shows. It reminds me to much of a soap opera, I guess thats why. Its just not that eye catching and not intesting as all the others.

VOY: I'm not sure when I first saw this show, but it was a okay show. I know after seeing the show on tv many times, I grew into liking it. I thought this show was better than DS9, so to me that was improvement. So I never mind watching this show when it was on tv, because its a good show.

Ent:As all the others, I don't exactally remmber when I first seen this on tv, but from the begaing it was okay. I didn't care for it at first, but I grew into it. So I dont mind watching it when its on tv, I will watch this show along with all the others as long as its not DS9.

Star Trek The Animaited series: I don't remmber watching this, but I'll let you know what I think of it once I buy the dvd.

Star Trek movies 1-11: As far I can remmber on all the older movies except Nemeis and Star Trek XI, I seen others on tv. Nemeis and Star Trek XI are the first movies of Star Trek I seen in theaters, all the others I seen on tv. I had each a differnt oppion about the ones I didn't seen in theaters and has it has changed over the years. There were some I didn't like at first, and now I do. And now after seeing the new movie, it got me really back into Star Trek again, so I love all the movies and shows expect for DS9 and The Motion Picture. But I think I cant' stand DS9 over The Motion Picture. If those two where the only choices I had it would not be DS9, that show is so boring! Ayways thats all I got for now.

Yeah, it is a "soap opera" insomuch as every contunuing serialized drama is a "soap opera". See: I, Claudius, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Oz, Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Mad Men... all soap operas.. :vulcan:

And I suppose it's not eye-catching or interesting to the people who can't bear watching a show on a regular basis or paying attention to what happened in previous episodes.

I never thought about it before but I guess DS9 was a bit more soap opera than any of the other Trek series. It had a bigger cast and a lot of continuing personnel stories. No other series had so much going on between primary and secondary characters. I don't know if it was intentional or if it was the writers tying in little bits of the past to develop a story. Either way, I think it is why I liked it better when I got to see it in order on DVD.

TOS: Never seen on TV. The last time it was aired was about 20 before I was born. (Where I live of course).

TNG: As good as I remembered (which was very good).

DS9: Better, but only because I missed the first 4.5 seasons.

VOY: Also as good as I remembered (some episodes were good, others terrible).

ENT: I fell asleep while watching it on TV (no joke), no I'm not going to waist money by buying them.
