Probably. But then again at least in the early days of the program they DID take pains to portray the military as realistically as possible, which is why they had such good support from the actual USAF.

His father was the Desert Storm vet and suffering from PTSD Master Sergeant Greer's father abused his mother. In regards to Greer's age, wasn't there an episode that was a flashback sequence of his joining the Marines? I also thought there was mention of him serving in Desert Storm. That would make him, at the youngest, something like 37.

SG-1 had a consultant from the Air Force to make sure things were realistic. But this is SGU, ot my knowledge that show didn't have a military consultant. That and Greer was a Marine anyway, which we've already established the writers don't seem to be very familiar with. In fact, the USMC doesn't really get a very positive portrayal in the Stargate franchise. Take a look at the following Marine characters:
-Colonel Makepeace: Didn't exactly get along with O'Neill or Daniel, and thought of Teal'c only as "the Jaffa." Turned out to be in on Maybourne's rogue NID alien technology thing.
-Lt. Ford: Infected with Wraith enzyme which turned him into a superhuman psycho.
-Sgt. Bates: An in-your-face jerk who was always stirring up trouble before getting his ass kicked by a Wraith leading to a medical discharge.
-Colonel Everrett: Declared himself in charge of Atlantis and gave Weir and Sheppard a hard time. Got fed on by the Wraith.
-Sgt. Greer: Was facing charges for assaulting a superior officer.
Also, General Landry thinks Marines are "cocky sons of bitches" and says he can't stand them.
