Was Ethan secretly fired?

It's more literal than that. Dexa is "Axed" backwards. Ethan was killed with a hatchet in an insane rampage. The entire cast was maimed. They continued the rest of the series with sock puppets. No one noticed.
Hmm, so that explains why Garrett Wang gave a much improved performance during those final episodes.

I just felt bad for Neelix following the end of Endgame - we see Seven playing e-mail chess or whatever with him, she tells him that they'll talk tomorrow, and that's the last we hear from the guy. I still have this image of him trying to call Seven the next day, with no-one answering :)

I always thought they'd have used the MIDAS technology to make contact with him after they returned to the AQ. Granted, I bet it wasn't immediate.

I don't know how and why they decided to ditch Neelix three episodes from the end but it was so incredible stupid. The guy had always stated that he would remain loyal to captain Janeway, that he wanted to go to Earth with the rest of the crew and he called himself "morele officer". Then suddenly they run into a bunch of Talaxians of all people on a remote asteroid so incredible far away from Talaxian space (and the Talaxian spaceships weren't comparable to Voyager in speed and anything else either) and suddenly Neelix decides to tsay with them. How incredible silly!

Agreed.

Janeway wasn't going to be his wife, Dexa was.
Nobody chooses their friends over their spouse.

If Neelix got to Earth, what would he do once he got there?
He didn't have any skills useful to anybody.

Hey..easy on the Beltran "plank" comment. :D I resent that remark! :D
Anyway, when Homestead premeired and Neelix left, I thought..oh no..now the show is really ending! And when he left, I teared up. I remember watching an interview with Mulgrew and she said that when Ethan "left" the show, most of the cast and crew burst into tears, realizing that this really was the end and that it was finally over. I can picture Mulgrew at the end of her last shot, grabbing onto her Captain's Chair when they were taking it away screaming:NOOOOOOOOOO!!! NOT THE CHAIR! ANYTHING BUT THAT!!!

I thought it was dumb when he left. Aside from the fact that these random Talaxians showed up out of nowhere, I thought it was totally out of character for Neelix to leave Voyager so soon.

Yeah, he found some of his own people, but it seemed awfully convenient that he happened to instantly fall in love.

How long does sexual attraction usually take for someone that hasn't had any in a very long time? Janeway was so hard up, she was desperate enough to bang a lightbulb. Harry needed it so bad he was willing to risk his career and suffer with an STD just for some intimate affection.

There's sex, and then there's leaving your life behind to move in with someone. Being horny should not determine the course of your life.

Nelix was atalented guy who had survived in the Delta Quadrant for a long time. He would definitely find something important to do.

The whole plot when he met "Axed" was silly. He should have remained on the ship and gone to Earth with the others. It was silly to dump him.

What a tragic fate! Dumped on that barren asteroid. He will end up like that guy in a Rolling Stones song:

"Maybe the choice you did wasn't really right
and you go out and you won't come back at night!"

So he takes a shuttle and start looking for his old friends! :)

This is Neelix were talking about.
He's been alone since he was very young. He was desperate to save Kes and be with her to the point he was very jealous of any guy that talked to her. He was desperate to stay on Voyager and amoung other beings so much so that he was selling drugs & stealing just to get a map, so he could be useful. He made desperate attempts to make Tuvok like him. These are all subtle signs of someone looking for something more.

Neelix is someone that comes from nothing because he was homeless. His entire theme was one of finding a family. Rules of leaving your life behind don't apply to him, he never had one to begin with. It's more than just being horny, he's trying to regain all that he lost. He's been trying to get back "home" just like the Voyager crew. Finding a colony of Talaxians all living together was like going home again to him. Voyager was only a surrogate family. They weren't like him, just like Odo, Worf & the Doc. live around humans but long for the comfort and fimilarity of their own kind. Janeway understood all of that which is why she knew she had to let him go.

Would you really deny the right for somebody to have a wife and child of their own just to selfishly keep him on the ship? It would be dumb to pick your friends over your future wife. A spouce is supposed to be the greastest friend you'll ever have.

Neelix was dirty, smelly and homeless when Voyager found him, good job all those so called skills did him. Not to mention he lied about half of them.

What if Voyager's journey took longer than 7 years? What if it did become a generational ship? Neelix would never reach Earth & never have any future or family of his own to carry out his legacy. What would really be the point of staying?

Every child has to grow up & move out of the parents house some time. Neelix grew up & felt it was his time to move out.

Janeway's method of giving Neelix an 'out' to not be hindered in leaving the ship is one of the most clear examples of her selfless love for her crew that was shown. Tuvie's 'dance' chokes me up too. For all he was an annoying character, I thought Neelix was given a great send-off.

It's fine, I guess. I just have a problem with how fast it happened. Maybe if it had been spread out over a couple episodes. Or maybe if they had found a better way to introduce a random group of Talaxians that far away from home. Sometimes I think writers forget how big space actually is.

Ethan Phillips wasn't fired, what would be the point with only a few episodes to go.

No, the powers that be just decided to give his character a happy ending given that they only had a few episodes left.
I liked the episode; nevertheless, I remained convinced the miners would return and not rest until they destroyed the colony.

I didn't feel good at all about them leaving a main character in that predicament; but Neelix would have had it no other way under the circumstances.

Similar to the Dick Van Dyke show, which, right before the finale, gave each of its supporting characters (Even Mel) an ep in which to shine.

So is the our Earth but just like in Trek, we seem to start wars anyway even though there's plenty of room for everyone to live without stepping on each others toes.
