I was hoping that Enterprise would be one of the Daeledus class ships or something entirely new but not the seemingly retro-Akira class garbage that we got.

The writers should have been working on it a lot longer before it finally went into production, I think Bermaga and the team were given 6 months to produce.
That is what I was thinking as well...but they had been working on ideas and fleshing out characters apprently at least far back as Season Five of Voyager.
