Was Atlantis and SG1 a childish version of Star Trek?

So I've seen all of SG-1 and I'm on the 4th season of Atlantis and this is what I've noticed.

Both Atlantis and SG-1 seem more about action and humor than pure sci-fi.

Because Star Trek (any of them) was never about action and humour? I really must have been watching some other show!

No, both shows were fun, fairly family orientated Sci-Fi action shows. What's wrong with that ?

Not everything has to be all doom and gloom all the time.

Okay, I meant it made it more appealing to younger people.

I started watching reruns of the original Star Trek when I was 7 years old, and I loved the show. I doubt that I would have understood SG-1 or SG:A at that age.

Could part of your issue be that Stargate is set in the present, while Star Trek is set several hundred years in the future, therefore putting Star Trek on a sci-fi pedestal because it represents the technological and ideological future that we COULD have, as opposed to portraying the current human flaws (more or less) that we see in Stargate?

I loved Star Trek when I was a kid too (I believe I started watching it when I was five), but my favourite episode at the time was the one where Kirk fought the giant lizard thing. My tastes have improved considerably since then.

I don't think SG-1/Atlantis was as concerned with presenting new ideas as such. I think Trek did create more creative situations for our protagonists than the 'gates which did have more of a focus on military threats. Maybe that's not completely fair, I think Trek had maybe a broader scope at least, keeping in line with its more broad-reaching premise. The 'gates were more entrenched in contemporary Earth-side things.

Arena is still among one of my Top 5 of TOS.

Not childish so much as just not as interesting and thoughtful as some Star Trek (not all) has been.

Now that would have been interesting! But Stargate has never really challenged the audience or broken any "rules" by depicting the good guys as having flaws any worse than, say, McKay's personality quirks. It's just safe, bland comfort food.
