Warren Ellis Challenge: Design the 13th Doctor

I can sorta see that but I think the problem is that we got too much of the same thing in a row, for example, book after book with a deeply unlikable 'Space Ace'.

Yeah, well she was created by the editor of the range so the rest of us were sort of stuck with her. Personally I always tried to remind us that the original Ace was still in there somewhere, and that she knew she had become something a bit iffy (on several levels)

Incidentally, I've always meant to ask you: who's your favourite Doctor to write for?

In the end, I think the Hartnell Doctor was the most interesting to write for, because there are so many interesting layers to him.

The 8th was the hardest because (at the time, this is pre-Big Finish) there was only about 40 minutes' screen time of him.

The 3rd is probably the least interesting to write for as he's pretty much WYSIWYG, with little depth to explore.

Okay guys, I am almost done with my character design.. I will be uploading that at Approx. 8PM EST. so if you are interested and want to see what I had to offer as my personal idea for a 13TH Doctor, please stop by that website and check it out, and if you could...

show me some love.. I would most definitely be gracious..

a couple of cool little tidbits:

The White Scarf: A throw back to the old days of heroes, aviators, and pioneers of adventure, so what better homage to those bygone days then to have the ultimate adventurer, the doctor sporting a brilliant classic white aviator scarf, as a status and testament to that spirit.

for more on the history of the aviator scarf, please check out this little blog:

The Trilby Hat: Originally I was going to go with a Fedora, but I ultimately decided a Trilby would be much more fun, and it has recently become a somewhat stylish accessory, though not yet mainstream..

So what is a Trilby Hat? A trilby hat (or simply trilby) is a soft felt men's hat with a deeply indented crown, and a pinch at the front. The brim is narrow and often sharply upturned at the back.

They were widely worn from the late 1920s onwards, initially as a casual sporting hat, such as for wearing to horse races. By the end of World War II, it had largely supplanted other hats such as Homburgs and bowlers for wear with a suit or smart casual, although it never replaced flat caps. It continued to be commonly worn this way until hats stopped being everyday wear for men in about the mid 1960s.

The hat's name derives from the stage adaptation of George du Maurier's 1894 novel Trilby; a hat of this style was worn in the first London production of the play, and promptly came to be called 'a Trilby hat'.

So those are a few little details of the outfit I have chosen, and a back ground on the whys and reasoning behind the choices..

see you guys at 8PM! I have to get back to my other job..

The 8th was the hardest because (at the time, this is pre-Big Finish) there was only about 40 minutes' screen time of him.

That's interesting. I'm no writer, but I would have thought that that made him easiest to write, in some ways. A blank slate to work with - it would be harder for people to say 'Oh, you got him all wrong.'

I don't read any DW books but used to read a lot of Treklit and it used to irk me when writers didn't quite get a character right. It's easier to make that accusation with, say, Captain Kirk, than with someone who only appeared onscreen once.

What it meant was little consistency - a bit of a problem in a series about one main character who's supposed to be the same guy throughout...

okay so I am late guys.. but I promise, it will be up later..about maybe 1 and a half hours or so.. I am having PC problems..have to reboot, and do a scan disk..

Working on a doodle of me own to throw up, this is essentially the 'thumbnail' Ive been most happy with so far, but it might change considerably in the final version.

My concept of the thirteenth Doctor would be a man who has finally found and made peace with 'himself'. A balance of all the personalities that came before him though not just a mixture of them. He has been through the worst the universe could offer but is more charming than cocky, with a twinkle in his eye, an easy smile and just enough lines on his face and gray in his hair that he is more handsome than hot, but striking enough to stand confidently beside movie stars and royalty. Blah blah blah, here he is.

Great outfit, and the variations give it some nice versatility, but I can't help but feel like it is on a mannequin. You're designing the Doctor, not just his outfit. Give him some character!

^ Venardhi and Starsuperion both of those are really great. :) Vendardhi, your guy is handsome and characterful. I can almost hear his voice. I think he sounds a little bit like Patrick Macnee. Starsuperion your design is so professional looking and I love the different views of his hair. But, I can't get a handle of his personality. I like the way you've brought in the Who clothing heritage and made it contemporary.

I am going to give his face a bit of personality (smile and wink), which I think will bring his personality alive and once tied to the overall look it should do the trick...thanks Venardhi and willsbabe!

Wow that's great and I agree with the others that we need to see his personality...he looks like he's an Auton!

Here is the updated version.. with personality.. modeling his new duds for everyone..

Edit: per Sci's request, he has a much more open smile, but I am stopping short of the super massive grin.. it just doesn't feel like this doctor would be doing that.. he would be more reserved I think, and yet more of 1 step ahead of everyone, including himself..

saving the universe 1 crisis at a time and all with a smirk and a grin, self assured in what he is doing..

^^ His smile seems somehow... shy. And if there's one thing the Doctor is not, it's shy. Maybe give him a big, huge, Tom-Baker-slash-Christopher-Eccleston-slash-David-Tennant-style grin?

hmm, an eccy-tenny-bakey grin eh??

ya know, pretty soon this doctor is going to be a Trekbbs submission and not a starsuperion one..LOL:lol:

Done, major grin added..

:bolian: Nice. Something about him just seems much more alive, even with smaller smile than an Eccy-Tenny-Bakey grin :)

Verandi your design looks like a cross between the X-Men character Banshee and Colin Baker...very cool. Starsisupon I love yours...especially with the top hat.
