Warpath Discussion Thread (major, major spoilers)

I don't usually rate books by numbers either, but if I had to, I guess I would put around a 7. On a more objective basis, I enjoyed Avatar (as a whole), Demons of Air and Darkness, Abyss, Twilight, Cathedral, Rising Son, "Horn and Ivory," and all six stories of Worlds of Deep Space Nine more than Warpath.

Who is gonna be the Author? (I don't own Warpath yet (Will change soon), so I would appreciate all informations given in Warpath)

Wow! And to think my bookstore doesn't have Warpath in yet! I knew I should have done SOMETHING while going through that Barnes & Noble I was in this weekend while in Chicago...I eagerly await this title. Thank you all for not spoiling the ending, and even though I've read my way through, for me it's not really a spoiler unless you reveal ALL the context surrounding it. But that's just me.

Was anyone else disappointed with the revelation about Taran'atar's motivation?
I thought the highlight of the last WoDS9 was to push him, believably, to his breaking point and his final explosion. To learn that it came from the external influence it did... seemed to undercut the earlier character work.
That, and Kira's coma visions, struck me as efforts to subvert expectations - As someone already said, this book had some pretty obvious marks to hit, so I could understand the urge to try something unexpected... but both struck me as weaker points.
Looking back on the coma visions, I think the problem, IMHO, was that, we've all seen these kinds of visions before, we know we're supposed to be scratching our heads, and we know there's a punchline coming that will spell it out. Knowing all that, I think the punchline needs to come earlier - between setting the stage and the final reveal, it's not as compelling.
The only Cardassian woman I could imagine it being was the one it turned out to be...

That's not what happened. This story unfolds in the manner intended, consistent with the direction in which the saga is moving.

I hate Amazon.ca ; I paid the extra for the 2-5 day delivery on Monday - and it's supposed to dispatch in 24 hours. It JUST got sent out today -
And today, even though their website says it's still pre-order only, my local Chapters bookshop has three copies of it in.
I'm so pissed off with Chapters and Amazon.ca right now.
In the UK - when they say dispatch within 24 hours, the book/dvd/cd/whatever gets sent out either that day or the following day. Not five damn days later !
Grrrr, sorry for the rant, I needed to vent.

^ I've only used their service a few times. I got tired of receiving my packages in dilapidated conditions, and having to go through a whole new song and dance routine to get the items exchanged / reimbursed. "Can you send us an image of the damaged book?"

I bought it yesterday at Wal-Mart and finished it about 2.5 hours later.
Have to admit that I found it a very quick read, relatively fast paced, and excellent.
I'll admit the dream/coma sequence was a touch odd, but think I've been able to grasp to potential imagery. Of course the spelling out of the basis of the castle's purpose was helpful.
The only major problem I have with the book is the long wait until the next DS9 book publishes.
Guess that's what a good writer wants; the ability to hook someone into continuing with their story.

What, y'all were expecting an ending in a book based on DS9? I know everyone hates the "books like TV episodes" analogy, but think of it this way: if WoDS9 was the season finale of Year 8, then "Warpath" is the premiere of Year 9 and if one were to look at it like a season premiere, in that it sets up new plot threads and advances old threads from before, much like how "A Time to Stand" set up the sixth season. You want resolution? Read a Next Gen book.

I don't think it's part of the Mirror Universe series because I recall Marco repeatedly saying that the Mirror Universe stories would be self-contained within their own universe.
In addition to what Emh points out, since Fearful Symmetry is scheduled for April 2007 and the MU series is to be released in February and March, it's not likely they're one and the same. Of course, there could well be aspects of the MU story that relate in some way to Fearful Symmetry.
Oh, and Rat Boy: since nearly every other post-finale DS9 book has had a scope and resolution with which I was satisfied, I was indeed expecting one here, and I don't feel it's unreasonable to do so. Being part of an ongoing series is not license for an individual book to feel incomplete.

Well, I for one thought the book was fantastic. I have to admit the same confusion that Rat Boy did, namely trying to figure out exactly which Kira we were dealing with in given circumstances. I'm still not sure I have it straight. But, I'm sure it'll all be made clear when the next book comes out in...

): Write the next book in the sequence and plop it down on Marco's desk, fully edited already, so that all he has to do is stamp his name on it and send it to the printer. Please?
