Warp Highways? The size of the UFP?

earth is not at the centre of the federation, not far from the klingon, romulan, and cardassian borders. ds9 is located at a
warp highway. how the klingons could attack the cardassians without crossing romulan or ufp space, escapes me. all the way around? the shape of the federation must be determined by the shape of the spiral arm of the galaxy we are located on, and the ufp shares it with some more powers. the galaxy is some 120,000 ly across, but only about 5,000 ly thick, and i don't know what the measures of our spiral arm are.
