Warp Drive

WarMaster1701

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Warp seemed much faster in this film. They got to Vulcan in minutes.

I could be wrong. What do you guys think?

Vulcan is pretty close at only 16 light years from Earth. At high warp of course they'd get there fast, that made a lot of sense to me and glad they showed how close it was.

I sense another revision of the Warp speed chart is in order.

And I'm fine with that. Vulcan should be minutes away, considering some of the much longer distances previous Enterprises have traveled in hours. (Of course the real answer is, Warp is as fast as the plot needs it to be.)

I also really liked the warp effect. The more we learn about how spacetime manipulation might work, the more the old "streaky rainbow stars" seemed a little too convenient. If you are traveling inside a bubble of custom spacetime, your view of the outside universe should be limited at best.

I miss the soft glow after they go into warp though.

I'm fine with the Enterprise not having the flash, but I wish the Narada and Spock's ship had the flash, if only to further the point that they were from another time.

Then again, I wanted the Phoenix in First Contact to have the warp-streaks that were prevalent in the TOS movies. Rather, the Phoenix warped like every TNG era ship. Oh wells.

I thought the warp effect was awesome. It was one of the really cool newer effects, IMO. The ship had to be fast, didn't everyone see all the high tech steam oozing, moonshine stills?

When the ships went to warp it was like they were being shot out of a cannon. Warpdrive had some definate power to it

I didn't really get a sense of how long it took them to get to Vulcan. With the magic of movie time lining we have no idea when Chekov began his announcement and when Kirk woke up.

They didn't get to Vulcan in minutes. There was a cut between Kirk being knocked out and him waking up, in which time McCoy had gotten changed, for instance.

glad other bods noticed this too...see, abrams and co may not have violated everything from our childhoods. just the wonders of movie magic ;)

The new warp effect is awesome, we've finally got some starfleet ships that seem sturdy and powerful...got one at the top of my christmas list!! :p

There still should've been a "flash" though.

Warp drive was done OK.

And, I guess Sulu did kind-of leaving the parking-break on. ;)

My only dislike about the way warp works now is that they should have seen the debris field coming, and not practically smashed into it like they did. Of course that was for dramatic effect, but still seemed weird to me.

I have to admit, I like the new effect but it did seem pretty quick and harsh. Actually it felt a little like the jump effect in the new Battlestar Galactica but not nearly as soft. I suppose this is going to set the standard for a new hard core trek, which is fine by me.

What do you think, Sulu's still learning, after all. :D
