Warners to release entire 2021 slate to HBO Max

Wow, thats shocking. I guess it makes more sense then potentially having a film backlog for over a year, but there are some really big movies on the list. I'm glad that I'll be able to see some of them around the time they come out this way, because even when we get a vaccine I'm not trusting theaters until probably 2022 at the earliest.
 
Insanity. A death blow to cinemas and destroying a part of our culture.
 
And given that they're just about to go 4K/HDR/Dolby Vision with WW84 there'll be copies of all of these movies available to pirates in the highest quality available a few hours after release.

The movies will be in theaters and HBO Max on the same day

After a month those films will leave the platform for the remainder of their theatrical run
 
This topic is more than slightly misleading because all of those films will still be released in theaters; they're just being simultaneously released on HBO Max as well.
 
I just watched the announcement video and I'm in shock. I could see WW1984, and maybe a few of the other early movies, but every move for the entire year is just insane.
When I first saw the headline on Entertainment Weekly's website, I thought it was a joke.
I'm happy I'll be able to watch them at home, but I have to wonder how badly this is going to hurt the theaters. There are some huge movies in that list, and this is going to take a huge chunk out of the money they're going to make.
HBO Max listed all of the movies that will be coming out:

  • Dune
  • The Many Saints of Newark
  • King Richard
  • Cry Macho
  • The Matrix 4
 
Giving people the option of watching these films at home or in a theater for the first month of release isn't going to hurt anything.

I previously railed against the notion of movies bypassing theaters entirely and being released only on VOD platforms right out of the gate, but that's not what is happening here.

Given that the vast majority of a movie's money happens in the first couple weeks of it's release, I'm pretty sure that it will. I really can't see that many people rushing out to the theaters to see these movies when they have the option to stay at home.
I doubt it will destroy the movie theater industry, but it will definitely take a massive chunk out of the money they're going to bring in next year.
WW1984 would have been almost a guaranteed #$1Billion, but now there's no way it's going to make even close to that.
At least this will probably mean HBOMax's subscriptions are going to just explode.
 
Apparently WB beat Disney to the punch. They're supposedly going to announce something similar during their investor meeting.
 
From today through January 15, if you buy six months of HBO Max all at once, they're giving a 20% discount.

A lot of these movies are going to lose money, but it beats never releasing them.

What difference does a month make? It only takes a day for those high definition movies to be on pirate websites.

Yeah, hasn't HBO always had a piracy thing? I think I read that GoT was the most pirated show ever, and now there will be perfect quality new movies available day one. WB (or more accurately AT&T) must really need more HBO Max subscribers.
 
I love it. The only reason I go to theaters (prior to the pandemic of course) is because I don't want to wait 6 months for the film to hit Blu-ray or streaming services. I much prefer watching at home. Hopefully this trend of simultaneous streaming releases will continue post-COVID.
 
I got mixed feeling about this. On the one hand, if this catches on with all the studios doing something similar, I'm not looking forward to all signing up to multiple streaming services (I'm only signed up with two at the moment, and have no inclination to sign up for more). On the other, I find I just don't miss going to the theatre as much as I thought I would.

I'm sure not every single person pirates. They wouldn't see any business at all since every single thing on the channel is probably available somewhere.
