Warner Brothers Insults LOTR and Hobbit Fans With ME: UCE

I only saw the Hobbit Trilogy once, was terribly disappointed with the 2nd and 3rd movies. While I'm interested in seeing the "Fan Edition" I just haven't summoned up the interest lately.

An aside: TheOneRing.net is a mutual admiration forum that makes dissenting opinions most unwelcome. Love it or leave it (please!), basically. But it's good to hear they have acknowledged the WB situation to some extent.
Not been my experience at all. My wife was even quoted in an online blog regarding the intensity of the debate over the Hobbit films, wherein she asked for more polite and respectful discussion of the films, regardless of personal opinion.

I may not agree with everything on TORN but it is a respectful place that strives very hard to be polite, even in disagreement.

To be honest, any release like this, that comes out a fair amount of time after the final individual release or other "set" releases is a screw job. I'm not insulted because I expect this kind of thing. There's almost always a future combined release with just enough new material to piss us off.

I bought all the DVD & blu-ray extended collector's sets (with the figurines) after each was released, then bought the LOTR extended blu-ray set later on, since I wanted the blu-ray version.

In this case, no new content even ("material" could mean swag, so maybe you include that too).

I buy the figurine sets too. All mine are still in perfect shape and intact. I hear that it is common for the Argonath to lose their hands, or Minas Tirith to lose a spire in small accidents. The Hobbit figurines are plastic instead of ceramic or metal, so I imagine less breakable too, if not simply more cheap. I was prepared to spend $100 or less for an ultimate Middle-earth boxed set with the promised new content with or without figurine, but I did hope they would offer a SKU with figurine.

They are instead offered an $800 re-buy of what they already have and some swag.
Dude, enough with the $800 figure - it's already been noted the set won't actually be priced that. Relax.

To be honest, I think Peter Jackson did a very disappointing job with The Hobbit and that might actually have something to do with the lack of studio enthusiasm.
It's common knowledge that Jackson didn't want to do the movies at all; that's why he hired Del Toro, and by the time Del Toro dropped out, Jackson felt that he owed it to the studio and the New Zealanders the production would employ to not let it collapse, as it almost did half a dozen times. This is all public record, as is the fact that the reason the third movie exists at all is that production on the second got away from him, and he realized he couldn't complete it on time. Like Abe says in Lincoln, "As the preacher said, 'I could write shorter sermons, but once I start I get too lazy to stop.'"

Credible source? Bill Hunt got confirmation directly from Warner Brothers.

It sounds like you would agree that $800 is too high a price. What do you think it's worth?

Bill Hunt of DigitalBits.com said:
I figured there was absolutely no way Warner would charge $800 for a Blu-ray release of these films that contained no new disc-based content whatsoever. Had to be a mistake.

Which was why I was so surprised to see it appear again last night... and stick: $799.99. And yes, I’ve now confirmed it with the studio. That is the price. Not including sales tax, mind you.

I'm not quite sure what the complaint is in this thread. The 800 dollars price tag is a bit high, but the set looks solid. If it was lower I might get it, because I have nothing of these films except the DVD release of the first LOTR film.

I think the two you mentioned are more likely resin, which is fairly breakable. So far mine are perfectly intact, but the LOTR ones were still in the original boxes and on the shelf until recently, when I realized how big the Hobbit sets' boxes were.
I didn't get them for collectibility, so they came out of the boxes and now take up 2 shelves on their own.

Warner Brothers does not think the release is worth having Peter Jackson fulfill their original intentions, as mentioned in the commentaries on the discs in this set, to produce a collection with "great [new] material [that] was specifically collected for an ultimate retrospective documentary on all 6-films that Peter Jackson wanted to create for a set like this… including deleted scenes." Instead, nothing new except some swag for $800.

You know what? I think I'm just as glad. There is no possible way I could afford $800 for a blu-ray set (or the inevitable $1000+ Canadian that would end up being...). This way I'm only missing out on some physical swag, which I don't care about, rather than missing out on cool documentaries and deleted scenes! :p

Edit: I didn't realize until reading Brian W. Collins' Amazon comment that the physical media for the six movies is not included. I did know that Hobbit 3D is not included. I don't care about 3D, but "ultimate" should be ultimate. This is really an anemic "ultimate" release.

You probably know this, but it's not really spelled out in your comment, so just to clarify for others: the theatrical versions are digital-only in this set. The extended versions do in fact come on physical media.

Yes, that's right. Physical copies of the Extended Editions, and digital copies of both the Theatrical and Extended Editions.

Heh, yeah, I can understand that.

Sjees, what a big load of noise over a lot of nothing. If it's 800 dollars, don't buy it. If you're insulted over this, it's not because you are being insulted, but because you're making way to big a deal over a few blurays.

And this is coming from someone who LOVES the novels, the LOTR trilogy and was also disappointed with the Hobbit. Still need to see the last one.

Yeah, that's already been said several times in this thread, if you've read it. Yawn.

I'm reporting what's being written by an influential expert who has been in the industry for over 20 years - Bill Hunt of Digital Bits.com - who has heard from "a LOT" of fans and/or collectors who are "insulted" or at least very disappointed and explains why. I didn't invent the word, but I understand how people feel, and you can't tell people how to feel about it. It comes from a lot of people; from more than a few readers of this thread who don't happen to care, which is fine. It's not required that people care, but they do. You don't have to buy it. Would you? What do you think it's worth to you? Would you rather buy the same stuff multiple times, or get something new for your money?

...enough with the $800 figure - it's already been noted the set won't actually be priced that.
Oh, look! You were right! It's been reduced to $720 on Amazon. "You save: $80" LOL

I think WB thinks the set is worth 800 dollars. I understand the disappointment of people but not the "insult" part. That's the part that amuses me, as well as the fact that apparently this needs to be a clamor like there is no recourse any more.

Can we go back to the good old days of being insulted by Transformers sequels ad nauseum?

So, me saying something that has been said is 'yawn', but you repeating yourself is cool? Okiedokie.....
