Not been my experience at all. My wife was even quoted in an online blog regarding the intensity of the debate over the Hobbit films, wherein she asked for more polite and respectful discussion of the films, regardless of personal opinion. An aside: TheOneRing.net is a mutual admiration forum that makes dissenting opinions most unwelcome. Love it or leave it (please!), basically. But it's good to hear they have acknowledged the WB situation to some extent.
In this case, no new content even ("material" could mean swag, so maybe you include that too). There's almost always a future combined release with just enough new material to piss us off.
I bought all the DVD & blu-ray extended collector's sets (with the figurines) after each was released, then bought the LOTR extended blu-ray set later on, since I wanted the blu-ray version.
Dude, enough with the $800 figure - it's already been noted the set won't actually be priced that. Relax. They are instead offered an $800 re-buy of what they already have and some swag.
It's common knowledge that Jackson didn't want to do the movies at all; that's why he hired Del Toro, and by the time Del Toro dropped out, Jackson felt that he owed it to the studio and the New Zealanders the production would employ to not let it collapse, as it almost did half a dozen times. This is all public record, as is the fact that the reason the third movie exists at all is that production on the second got away from him, and he realized he couldn't complete it on time. Like Abe says in Lincoln, "As the preacher said, 'I could write shorter sermons, but once I start I get too lazy to stop.'"To be honest, I think Peter Jackson did a very disappointing job with The Hobbit and that might actually have something to do with the lack of studio enthusiasm.
Credible source? Bill Hunt got confirmation directly from Warner Brothers....the $800 figure - it's already been noted the set won't actually be priced that.
Bill Hunt of DigitalBits.com said:I figured there was absolutely no way Warner would charge $800 for a Blu-ray release of these films that contained no new disc-based content whatsoever. Had to be a mistake.
Which was why I was so surprised to see it appear again last night... and stick: $799.99. And yes, I’ve now confirmed it with the studio. That is the price. Not including sales tax, mind you.

I buy the figurine sets too. All mine are still in perfect shape and intact. I hear that it is common for the Argonath to lose their hands, or Minas Tirith to lose a spire in small accidents. The Hobbit figurines are plastic instead of ceramic or metal, so I imagine less breakable too, if not simply more cheap. I was prepared to spend $100 or less for an ultimate Middle-earth boxed set with the promised new content with or without figurine, but I did hope they would offer a SKU with figurine.
Warner Brothers does not think the release is worth having Peter Jackson fulfill their original intentions, as mentioned in the commentaries on the discs in this set, to produce a collection with "great [new] material [that] was specifically collected for an ultimate retrospective documentary on all 6-films that Peter Jackson wanted to create for a set like this… including deleted scenes." Instead, nothing new except some swag for $800.
Edit: I didn't realize until reading Brian W. Collins' Amazon comment that the physical media for the six movies is not included. I did know that Hobbit 3D is not included. I don't care about 3D, but "ultimate" should be ultimate. This is really an anemic "ultimate" release.
Heh, yeah, I can understand that. You know what? I think I'm just as glad. There is no possible way I could afford $800 for a blu-ray set (or the inevitable $1000+ Canadian that would end up being...). This way I'm only missing out on some physical swag, which I don't care about, rather than missing out on cool documentaries and deleted scenes!![]()
Yeah, unless every disc has "YOU SUCK!" written on it, I don't see the problem.
Yeah, that's already been said several times in this thread, if you've read it. Yawn.If it's 800 dollars, don't buy it. If you're insulted over this, it's not because you are being insulted, but because you're making way to big a deal over a few blurays.
Oh, look! You were right! It's been reduced to $720 on Amazon. "You save: $80" LOL...enough with the $800 figure - it's already been noted the set won't actually be priced that.
I think WB thinks the set is worth 800 dollars. I understand the disappointment of people but not the "insult" part. That's the part that amuses me, as well as the fact that apparently this needs to be a clamor like there is no recourse any more.Yeah, that's already been said several times in this thread, if you've read it. Yawn.
I'm reporting what's being written by an influential expert who has been in the industry for over 20 years - Bill Hunt of Digital Bits.com - who has heard from "a LOT" of fans and/or collectors who are "insulted" or at least very disappointed and explains why. I didn't invent the word, but I understand how people feel, and you can't tell people how to feel about it. It comes from a lot of people; from more than a few readers of this thread who don't happen to care, which is fine. It's not required that people care, but they do. You don't have to buy it. Would you? What do you think it's worth to you? Would you rather buy the same stuff multiple times, or get something new for your money?
More likely, "HAH! Sucker."Yeah, unless every disc has "YOU SUCK!" written on it, I don't see the problem.

That's a good point; there must be some desire behind the complaints for WB to make good. I don't see it coming....like there is no recourse any more.
