Warner Bros. Circling David Ayer for DC Comics’ ‘Suicide Squad’

Today is Margot Robbie's Birthday.

She's celebrating as Harley Quinn.

When I hear Harley Quinn I still think of Harlequin from the mid-80s (I think) comics. She was a friend of Dick Grayson...

On the show TMZ they were looking at pictures from Suicide Squad, and moaning about how awful Harley looked. I was thinking, "Are these people CRAZY?" Anyone who doesn't think Harley is hot, I don't want to know them.

I've been thinking about how clever DC is for making this film. Apart from it being a great concept in itself, it will provide a pool of villains for other DC movies, improving those movies' appeal, and also breaking them out of the one-off underdeveloped villain syndrome that hero flics tend to suffer from...

I also want to say I am digging the new punk look of Joker and Harley. After the classic look (Nicholson/Romero) and modern Joker (Ledger), we need a radical left turn rather than a repetition. It also helps with the gritty, hyper-real look the new DC films are going for. These days, I don't think many people are going to buy the purple zoot suit look outside the comics.

We've yet to get a really compelling "classic" interpretation along the lines of TAS. Considering all the other characters have this street/industrial/grunge/flophouse look going on, a ridiculous cartoonish Joker and Harley would have been a refreshing contrast.

Sure, the classic look can work, but definitely not in a movie like this.

There was a Suicide Squad panel at Comic-Con, but unfortunately it just consisted of director David Ayers showing a clip and introducing the cast (no Jared Leto, though). They apparently had to get right back to Toronto to continue production. It's nice that they showed up, at least.

Here it is (minus the clip they showed, of course):

I just saw the leaked trailer on Kotaku and it looks great. I think this and BvS could give Marvel a run for their money.
We did get a brief bit with Jared Leto's Joker, and putting aside the issues people have with his look, his performance looks like it should be pretty great.

I thought that the trailer was horrible. They hilariously don't get Harley Quinn at all (if they didn't already announce she was her Harley Quinn no one would probably identify her as Harley). Its the worst case of "character in name only" in the DC movies so far. Joker sounds almost as stupid as he looks, which really shouldn't be possibly considering how stupid he looks.

I'm cautiously interested in Batman v Superman, but Suicide Squad to me is more like that upcoming Fantastic Four movie. A trainwreck that I'll watch on DVD to see how badly some idiots can screw up a great premise. With the worst incarnations of Harley Quinn and Joker in any form of media ever (outside of maybe porn I guess, I'm not familiar with that stuff but it counts as media adaptations, even as parodies), Suicide squad should be an interesting train wreck, at least.

I've never been that interested in the Suicide Squad, but the feature film debut of Harley Quinn is of interest to me. (Not her live-action debut, of course, since that was in Birds of Prey back in the '90s.) And I've thought for a while that Viola Davis would be a terrific Amanda Waller, so I'd like to see that.
