Warner Bros. Circling David Ayer for DC Comics’ ‘Suicide Squad’

I'm looking forward to seeing a team movie set in the DC universe with Joker and Harley Quinn and Deadshot and Killer Croc and Captain Boomerang. The other characters I'm less familiar with. While they're unfortunately using the New 52 costume, I'm really excited to a live action Harley Quinn. And I'm really curious about Jared Leto as the Joker.
Is Joker part of the actual Suicide Squad? I thought the fan theory at the moment was that he was going to be the villain?

The original rumor was that Joker is locked up in Arkham at the onset of the movie and the Suicide Squad is being sent in to kill him, but Harley (who's part of the Squad) is using the mission to break him out.

At present though, the garish and stylised look of the characters seems somewhat at odds with MOS's supposedly more grounded take on things. I wonder if BvS: DOJ will start laying down the groundwork for a more fantastical universe?

Man of Steel is a movie where skyscrapers collapse like houses of cards the moment anything hits them -- something you'd think skyscrapers would be specifically designed not to do -- and where an entire major city can be devastated as if a nuclear bomb hit it and everyone's cheerful and laughing a short time later because apparently nobody died. There is nothing grounded about that movie, either physically or emotionally.

Close up of Killer Croc.

Them make-up/practical effects.

You'll notice I said 'supposedly.'

The makers of MOS were anxious before its release to talk about how that film was set in a realistic world. Part of their intent was to talk about how we'd react if aliens suddenly appeared in our midst. Certainly the aesthetic of the movie was subdued and other than the havoc of the last hour, they largely tried to avoid too much excess.

DOJ looks to be in keeping with MOS, though some of Snyder's pre-MOS visual touches were evident in the trailer - Superman in a glowing yellow light, for example.

The look of this film is, on the face of it, almost more in keeping with a Burton or Schumacher movie - OTT and heavily stylised. The villains look like unashamedly comic bookish. Part of me wonders if that's down to the absence of Nolan from the DCMU in general - are all of the forthcoming films going to be bigger and bolder - or if Ayer is ploughing his own visual furrow in this specific film.

Filming is disrupting traffic in Toronto. Link with exclusive on-set video.

Something was filming for a few days this week near my office west of downtown Toronto, and there were enough dressing room trailers on the street that I figured it was likely to be a movie. Suicide Squad came to mind but I can't find confirmation. The security guards looked bored out of their mind. TV shows film by my office a lot. Heroes Reborn and The Strain were both shooting there recently.

This post reeks of emotionally charged bias. :(

This "grounded" business has gone far too over the edge, anyway.

Once you introduce a Superman or a Joker, all bets are off.

That must be cool, when it's not a total pain. I've never even been near a TV show or movie that's filming.

I once saw John Sayles filming a scene of City of Hope on the campus of the University of Cincinnati, which I was attending at the time. All I remember about it is that it was a scene where a couple of characters were driving in a car, and for the purposes of the staging, they were driving the wrong way down a one-way road. I was aware that my sister was a big Sayles fan, but he had no particular significance to me. (I think Joe Morton may have been driving the car, but this was long before Eureka, so he wouldn't have been significant to me yet either.)

I noticed a quick view of a Midway City police cruiser there. Could anyone get a look at the license plate on it? Wondering if Midway's getting the same "federal district" treatment as Metropolis and Gotham for this movie continuity's purposes.

The Batmobile has spotted on-set - so I'm repeat the guess I made a few weeks ago (so not a spoiler):

Superman vs Batman will set up that the joker is in Prison after killing someone - Robin I am guessing

Suicide Squad will set up that Batman finds out that he's been released as part of the Suicide Squad

Batman Vs Joker (whatever they call it) will follow...

Set video

The batmobile will be chasing Joker and Harley. Never thought I'd say those words for a DC movie

Spoiler report: The Batmobile loses a wheel, and the Joker gets away.

(Okay, now that I've said that, I want that to be what actually happens. No comment on it in the film, just depict the event and let the audience put it together for themselves.)

I've heard that in a few other places, and it makes sense given what we've seen from he movie.

That makes sense, but they haven't announced a Batman centric movie yet have they?

Nothing specific, but there is reportedly an untitled, unscheduled Batman solo movie on WB's slate.

And, well, there is LEGO Batman in February 2017. But I doubt it'll be picking up story threads from the live-action movies.

Doesn't get more non-commital than that, does it? :)

WB said there are more Batman and Superman solo films in the works, back when they released their slate of movies. The reason they didn't give Bats and Supes confirmed dates, was because they didn't want the news to focus on when the next Batman or Superman film was going to be. They want you excited for Suicide Squad, Justice League, Wonder Woman and yes GREEN LANTERN!!

Hahaha
