Wanderlust

Despite growing up pretty close to PA, I rarely ever went there. The Poconos and Delaware Water Gap are nice outdoorsy areas. Valley Forge and Gettysburg are historical wartime sites. There are some really nice botanical gardens somewhere in the middle of the state my parents went to one time. Plus Philadelphia is a bigtime American city with a variety of things to do.

Isn't it funny that one hardly ever visits places in one's own country?
Maybe it's a little bit like with the cows that always almost break their necks, trying to grab a bit of the grass on the other side of the fence. Because that grass seems always greener and juicier :)

I'm off now for my 2 week trip to London and southern Wales. CU in 2 weeks :)

there aren't many people who get around that much. For a tramp / politician / pope you are too young. Are you a trucker by any chance? ;)

I knew plenty of people who visited 20 states by age of 12. I had visited 28 states before my 10th birthday.

I'm a mild mannered civil engineer by day and MBA student by night.

We have gone to dinner twice in 10 years (if not traveling or being paid for by others), been to 4 movies, don't go to concerts, attend maybe 1-2 sporting events per year, and live as cheaply as possible, so when there is some place fun we want to visit, the money is saved up and the trip is paid for in advance.

Coworkers and friends find up somewhere between spartan and miserly, then get jealous when we go someplace random we wanted to see.

Off to National Park #22 of 58 next month (Shenandoahs), then a week in Iceland in September.

We also travel cheap. Paying tuition on a frequent flyer credit card got me a trip to the Desert Southwest in engineering grad school, and I have almost 100,000 miles from careful charging on this current card and my MBA tuition. My balance is about $150 right now.

When traveling, we camp or stay at no frills motels, and we go to a grocery store every morning and get stuff for breakfast and lunch, then get a hearty dinner to bring back to the room, so no drinks or tip.

It's not tough if you are disciplined and know your budget.

I'm 24 and have visited nine of Canada's 10-odd provinces, plus (at a guess) 17 or 18 states. It doesn't seem that tough to me.

Oh dear, I started an avalanche (on the positive side, I revived the thread *grin*).

Is it normal for Americans and Canadians to travel so much at such an early age?

Over here in Europe we mostly stay in one place, especially with children, and since everyone tends to judge all the rest of the world by their own culture I'm afraid I was a little biased in my last post. I hope none of you took offense. Propably for you far-travelled folks staying in one place for decades seems as weird as travelling at a young age seemed to me.

But I've never been...to me.

Only province I'm missing is Newfoundland/Labrador. Even been to a territory (Yukon.) One of my goals is to take my Labradors to Labrador.

^I roadtripped through the Maritimes with my dogs last summer. As long as you give them play and bathroom breaks, they just sleep. You need to be sure your dog is acclimated to the car before hopping in for a weeklong trip though.

what is a mug-shot? A picture you'd want to print on a coffee mug or mousepad?(Sorry, this isn't my native language and colloquial expressions have a tendency to not be listed in dictionaries as they change so quickly)

Back to the thread's topic: I am just planning my next trip to GB. After having been to Cardiff and its surroundings I am curious to see more of Wales. Has anyone recommendations for me? I'll go there 2nd half of October.

A mugshot is the picture the police take when you have been arrested and are being processed at the precinct.

Where are you from anyway?

Bavaria (and no, I don't spend my weekends yodelling on some mountain top and drinking beer) :D

Thanks for explaining!

Other parts of the world on my wishlist:
Scotland
Ireland
Cornwall
Iceland
Madagascar
Barrier Reef
Japan
Egypt
The Canadian North and West Coast
Arctica
and if I ever get rich I'd love to take a trip to the moon

Well why the hell not?!?

My wife and I both blurted out New Zealand as the place we'd go if we had a million frequent flyers miles and could go anywhere.

After the Iceland trip, I think the next big one will be a dog mushing trip somewhere in Alaska or the Yukon. I went to a Husky ranch near Whitehorse and was immedately hooked on the idea.

Next year its back to Grand Teton National Park, to celebrate our 5 year wedding trip. We got married right in the park.
