Voyager's Uniforms

Since this thread is about uniforms- I've been wondering. Why are some of the Voyager uniforms pants with a long sleeved shirt and a jacket, but others are the ones the guys complained about always riding up their backsides? Was there a different purpose to the uniforms? Was it just Janeway who wore the one with the jacket? I didn't pay close enough attention to remember.

In their universe the uniform is pants, tank top, long sleeve shirt, jacket. In reality for filming they used a jumpsuit to give cleaner lines on camera. If the scene called for a jacket to be opened or taken off they switched to a jacket for that scene. There is a clip on youtube from very early in Voyager's run showing Roxann Dawson going into wardrobe for a fitting and they talk about the stirups on the pants that keep the pants crisp and straight and how uncomfortable they are. I've seen Garret Wang joke in conventions how he thinks he can't have children because of how uncomfortable the pants were

So it

Was purely a filming thing? Because it's pretty obvious which they're wearing in each scene, which for me was distracting.

I remember seeing various actors wearing the tank top...Tom and B'Elanna and Janeway come to mind... but I also seem to remember Tom (and maybe Tuvok) wearing what looked like a regular t-shirt underneath.

I can't say if this is completely true but it's what I've heard the actors talk about at conventions. For most scenes they had the solid jumpsuit for the clean lines on camera. If they were going to be wearing the tank or tshirt then they switched to those for the scene.

Regardless, those jumpsuits were so unattractive on everyone. Which reminds me of the later uniforms from Endgame and how they made everyone look pudgy.

That's one wish I have for the new series. I hope the actors can be comfortable in whatever costume they are wearing.

Surely I'm not the only one who noticed this.

When I started to rewatch Star Trek: Voyager, I couldn't help but think about why some of the Maquis, who didn't go to the Academy, still got there uniforms. Tuvok even mentioned in the very first episode that you had to earn your uniform by passing Starfleet training. Now why is it that the Maquis that didn't go through Starfleet training still get their uniforms? Neelix, Kes or Seven didn't receive uniforms because they didn't go to the academy, so why should the Maquis?

(I do realize that some of the Maquis did join Starfleet and finished the training and earned their uniforms, but that doesn't excuse the fact of the others getting a uniform.)
I think it was all about Janeway's idea of one crew with one mission. Having the Maquis in civilian clothes would have prevented the unification and cooperation between Starfleet and Maquis crewmembers.
Still I wonder why Neelix and Kes didn't get Starfleet uniforms as well. At least Kes did have such skills after her learning period with The Doctor that she would have qualified for that.

As for uniforms, I really like the Voyager and DS9 uniforms.

But I wouldn't have complained if the Voyager crew would have had TNG uniforms. Those were also great.

The later uniforms were horrible.

Wow. After all these years I never knew this. I always thought they were wearing the pants, undershirt, jacket combination.

I wonder why the uniforms were always so uncomfortable for the actors. The lower half could easily just be normal black-grey trousers with some tweaks to the waistband and fly for all that the viewer would have noticed. The tops would have taken a bit more work but they could have just been cardigans (maybe change the zips or buttons for something else) with coloured bits at the shoulders.
