voyager vs. ...

this is my first time on this forum. i've been watching star trek since i was about 6, and over this time voyager has become my favourite. for a variety of reasons. but i've never known how people compare voyager to the other star treks. so i guess what i'm asking is, what is the opinion of voyager vs. the others? this might be really dumb so i'm sorry if it is. haha. i'm sure someone will say i'm an idiot or something, if this is anything like any of the other forums i've been on. :P

Tupee, Bald, nappy come bald, Bun come bob, bad die job.

That's all four series explained completely and relevantly in relation to one another.

Voyager is not usually regarded as either the best or the worst Star Trek series - although some will vehemently proclaim it to be one or the other! Personally, I adore all Star Trek to varying degrees and find VOY to be an extremely enjoyable show. For me...

TOS
DS9
VOY
TNG
ENT

I would say Voyager was probably the worst of the bunch. At the time it aired, it felt stale and rehashed after 7 years of TNG and I think 2 or 3 of DS9. It was a lot of recycled storylines and the characters were intensely dull because of how poorly the whole thing was written. To rank shows as the chap ahead of me did, it would be:

TOS
TNG
DS9
ENT
Two and a Half Men
Paint Drying
VOY

Hah hah that's rough man, putting T&1/2M above Voyager.

Frankly I loved Voyager almost as much as TNG. Voyager seemed to have a lot more action than TNG, which TNG sorely lacked, but TNG had better stories (more hard SF). I found it a lot more consistent also. While very few eps in VOY I would consider to be better than a 7, I also didn't find many eps to be worse than a 5, save a select few like Threshold.

TNG was more erratic. It could hit a solid 10 in some episodes, but other would scrape the barrel at 2's or even 1's

So for my list, it would go like this:

TNG
A tie between TOS R and VOY
ENT
DS9
Paint Dry
T&1/2M

I think the better Voyager episodes were as enjoyable as anything from TNG. VOY definitely has its faults that keep it from being considered one of the better Treks, but I also think it's underrated, and well worth watching (at least, from season 4 onwards).
It was often formulaic, and relied a lot on CG action stuff, but if you don't mind that (I sure don't) then it's quite entertaining. Juts don't expect too much groundbreaking stuff or story arcs.

It's a decent show, but one that floundered and wasted some of its better qualities and ideas on mediocre storylines or just not using them more often in general. It was also kinda hit-and-miss with the cast, had some inconsistent characterizations, and has some of easily what is ST at its worst. However, I also think it has what is some of ST at its best, and the characters that are GOOD, it knocks out of the park. It just isn't enough to rise up to the level of TNG (and sure as hell isn't nearly as good as DS9).

In a way it'd be EASIER to say I just hate it, with all the things about it I find frustrating, but that simply isn't true since I definitely got more good out of it.

Well, let me start with a list:

VOY
TNG
TOS
DS9
ENT

I have to state one thing: I love Voyager's seasons 1-3! :bolian:

I don't like Voyager's seasons 4-7 so if I compare the whole of Voyager with TNG, then TNG will win due to more good episodes in seven seasons.

But despite my affection for the TNG characters as well, I must say that I really like Voyager's characters. I must also state that season 1, 2 and 3 of Voyager have more good episodes each than each TNG season.

Honestly, there is something special with Voyager, especially the characters!

I like TOS and DS9 as well, close call between them too. TOS wins thanks to great characters, although I like the DS9 characters too.

Enterprise didn't make it for me for several reasons. A weak series compared to the othre Trek masterpieces. However, Enterprise is a masterpiece compared to "Stargate Universe".

My favourite is always the one I'm watching which at the moment is Voyager. I'm half way through season 2.

Fair enough. Before I started my in-progress run through Voyager, I was thinking how I didn't find it as good as TOS, TNG and DS9. However, I find myself skipping VERY FEW eps and enjoying all the ones I do choose to re-watch. I am wondering if I'll feel the same about Enterprise, as that's up next.

Having said that, I'm about to end Season 6 and find I probably skipped more eps in that season than any other so far. I pretty much didn't skip anything in Seasons 1-3 except for the mind-numbingly dumb "Threshold."

^^"Threshold" never bothered me.
It's a fun "Halloween" type episode and doesn't mess with anything other than Trek's already far fetched science. What's unbelievably dumb in Voyager for me is "the Millennium Gate" in "11:59" and makes Trek no longer our direct possible future. It makes everything even our present, an alternate universe.

However, too spite all that find Voyager equal too TNG.
I find they both have just as many disappointing episodes as they did satisfactory & great ones. I found both casts equally entertaining as well as underdeveloped.
I found Picard, Data & Worf getting the most focus, much like Janeway, the Doc & Seven did and in both cases sometimes to the detriment of the other cast members.
I think both kept true to Gene's vision of what he wanted Trek too be, to spite the rumblings within the fanbase. I feel Voyager like TNG, it's easy to pick any one random episode to introduce any non-fan too the show. I think being introduced to the Trek Universe through Voy & TNG, will make many appreciate DS9 all that much more.

I find Voyager is fun and entertaining.
That's good enough for me.:)

I think that Voyager is the best looking show of the bunch. Not that the others didn't have their moments, but Voyager looked really well put together. It had slick sets, lighting, cinematography, and special effects. Each episode is like watching a 45 minute mini-movie. Voyager also has my favorite introduction.

I consider Voyager to be my favorite Trek series. Part of that is because I do have a sentimental attachment to the show. Voyager is the show that sucked me back into Star Trek. I'm watching DS9 for the first time right now, and it has become a very, very close second. I'm starting to feel that it is the best developed of the all the shows, but without my love of Voyager, I'd never have decided to get into DS9. That would have been a shame.

I can say that I do love all of the shows for different reasons, just some more than others. My personal standings as of right now:

1) VOY
2) DS9 (1.5, really)
3) TNG
4) TOS
5) ENT

Even bad Trek is better than a lot of the "decent" stuff on t.v. these days. :bolian:

If you can pick out the better episodes of Voyager you'll be okay. That's always been my opinion. TNG and maybe, maybe maybe maybe MAYBE DS9 are the only perfect Trek series.

TOS is viewed as a very progressive and hard (by TV standards) sci-fi show. It focuses little on character development or plot development in favour of exploring sci-fi concepts. The wonder and strangeness of the universe is the focus of TOS.

TNG is generally viewed as dry and intellectual sci-fi. It has fantastic writing and (some) great characters, but tends to be very stuffy and preachy with a few too many Patrick Stewart Speeches.

DS9 is the soap opera of the group and my personal favourite. It has by far the best and most developed characters in any Star Trek and a heavily complex, serialized plot. Deep Space completely abandons its sci-fi premise in favour of character drama.

Voyager is generally viewed (there are exceptions of course) as light entertainment. It has some decent characters, great action, decent writing, amazing special effects, and great comedy. The problem is that it's dumb as a stump.

Enterprise ... well, Enterprise sucks.

As you can see all four shows of importance have very different styles and appeal to different types of people, so you're not going to find many fans who love all the shows. Typically TNG and DS9 fans, the majority here on TrekBBS, hate or at the very least slightly dislike Voyager because of its lack of intelligence. The whole evolving into lizards thing didn't do Voyager any favours.

I see the focus of TOS to be very much based in the wonder and strangeness of humanity. TOS is really a collection of moral/ethical fables that just happen to be set in a futuristic//space based environment. Absolutely loved it!

I Have to agree with the description of TNG - Although I like intellectual scifi (as opposed to pure action), I began to find the stuffiness rather tedious and it spoiled some otherwise great storylines.

Loved DS9 - some great storylines and characters.

Loved Voyager too - some great plots and characters. I can forgive the bad episodes (all series had them) as the good episodes were really very very good. Also probably had the most talented cast of actors.

Here's mine:

TNG (Grew up on it. Just so fun and likable all around. Still my all-time favorite.)
TOS (Well written, produced and acted, but bogged down by being dated and having some episodes I just find tedious beyond belief.)
DS9/VOY (DS9 is more thoughtfully written, but not at all fun to watch; has the aforementioned TOS tediousness in every single episode. VOY is a lot more fun, but terribly written and kind of trashy.)
ENT (God, shoot me now. Everything about it was painful.)

So, not the worst, but close to it.
