Voyager Villains

I hated The Thaw when I first saw it but a half-dozen viewings later over a decade or so and I've come to mostly like it. The ending is awesome anyways.

I love how they effortlessly make a holographic Janeway. Even Data couldn't scare up a convincing Riker on a tight deadline.

I think "The Thaw" is a great Voyager episode that really creeped me out. The Clown is a worthy addition to Trek villains. His only downside was that, as an existential threat, he was limited in scope to his little virtual reality and the people connected to it. But he was malevolent, really like no other villain in Trek lore. Hard to believe it was sweet Lenny Kosnowski.

On a different note altogether, I found the Automated Personnel Units in "Prototype" to be intriguing villains. Making their power cells impossible to reproduce, in order to guard against the threat that they represent by nature, was a nice touch.

Not to mention that he was funny too. I have a taste for villains who are both mean and funny. Maybe because of my twisted sense of humor.

Favorite species: Species 8472
Second favorite: Vidiians
Honorable mentions: Hirogen, Vaadwaur, Voth (where they villains though?)

Favorite individual: Seska

Species 8472 is easily my favorite, and it's one of Voyager's best achievements imo.

The Hirogen were also a great concept, even if it was a not-so subtle borrowed concept from Predator.

It would have been interesting to see 8472 become Voyager's primary villain, but I don't think it would have worked as well as the Borg. Part of 8472's appeal is their mysterious nature. I basically ignore the way they were eventually treated though, with the silliness of the Earth episode.

"Prey," the episode featuring both 8472 and The Hirogen, is one of the most underrated episodes in Voyager's entire series. It's easily in my top 5.
