Voyager Uniforms

I just figured the Federation changed their uniform styles from time to time, as well as the combadge styles. You know, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

But they seemed to keep that red tunic with the strap over one shoulder for an awfully long time.

And as far as I'm concerned, the ugliest uniforms were the future uniforms as seen on Admiral Janeway in Endgame and on Beverly Crusher in All Good Things

Voyager is both the only Star Trek series to not have a special set of uniforms designed for it and the only one to keep the same uniform design throughout its run.

Since you mentioned those two episodes I looked up the images and you're right! The piping is particulary unflattering.

The TOS uniform changed between pilots and the series proper, and both were designed especially for it (as were ENT's)

In my C*nUn:

TNG uniforms were for all the Fleet, then starships only. DS9 uniforms started as stations only, but then (around Generations) they were phased onto the ships.

The TNG uniforms were still used, being downgraded to junior officers, even when the FC uniforms were brought in. Voyager kept the old uniforms because they had bigger stuff to deal with than uniform changing.

In the ENT episode best left forgotten the uniforms were tweaked with the addition of epaulettes and the persons name of the left side of the chest.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I had the impression that the uniforms in Voyager (and before, in DS9) were quite comfortable and were of a very nice style. Despite this, I learned through interviews, linke Wang's, that for some, they scratched and ‎tended to stick to the skin when the actors were sweating.

And then the color which matched the specialities of each department was a brillant idea, like the pips attached on the side of the collars and the design of the comm badge, which was particularly nice.

So late Voyager's uniforms were like late DS9 uniforms but with a different color scheme.

So late Voyager's uniforms were like late DS9 uniforms but with a different color scheme.

Most of the uniforms seen on screen were the jumpsuits. Occasionally, they were seen with a jacket - in-universe it was always like that but they were able to design more costume variations.

The new Generations Uniform was supposed to be used for Voyager too, IIRC, but when it was scrapped they went with the DS9 jumpsuit with a few tweaks

I don't think there were any actors--either on VOY or early DS9--who said they liked wearing the uniforms. It seemed the general consensus was that they were very uncomfortable to wear, especially all day.

One idea favored by producers was that the uniforms utilized 24th-Century fabric technology and had essentially "magic zippers" that could make the otherwise one-piece jumpsuits two-piece when necessary. Ditto for the First Contact/late DS9 uniforms (aside from Picard's and Sisko's).

I'm sure every uniform was uncomfortable. They all utilize super high rise pants like my grandfather wore(or like dress blues, where they go past the belly button, on men!), they have stirrups so they always look perfectly drawn, and they have a tank top sewn into the pants, so no frumpled tuck-ins.

Tuvok likes his uniform uber baggy, so maybe it wasn't as bad for him.

Right, but they had to manufacture different costume variations for the detachable jacket and the jumpsuit.

And written by someone with way too much free time. That really could have been boiled down to every costume being tailored for a different actor and that most of the regulars didn't wear the exact same costume during the run of the show.

lol. There were some changes engineered specifically for the Voyager show, i believe utility pockets for tricorders and phasers, rather than the velcro snap-on from TNG and DS9.

No one has mentioned this yet, but in "Generations," that uniform that Riker wears(the one at the end, where his sleeves are too short) is actually Sisko's uniform, and on an unrelated note, the writer Mike Sussman wore Sisko's TOS uniform in the episode "In a Mirror Darkly" making a cameo as "dead guy number 3." They just changed the chest insignia to the defiant's symbol.

I noticed they had several different varieties of the violet-grey shirt worn underneath. A short sleeve version all the way to the elbows for. Chakotay, a tailored, shorter sleeved version for Tom, a short sleeve version for Janeway, and a tailored tank top for B'Elanna.

What colour was that shirt? I used to wonder if it started out grey but a few washes turned it violet.

The black undershirts in "Living Witness" looked badass.

So to my point: Would you have liked it if VOY to use the TNG-style uniforms?

Nah. And if all characters wore these stellar, grey jumpsuits the world would be a better place.
