Voyager Relaunch question

What kind of direction might the relaunch (post-Spirit Walk) have gone were it not for the Destiny trilogy and/or the editorial idea of moving Voyager into the post-Nemesis continuity?

though IMO it probably would not be at the caliber of Full Circle and Unworthy :techman:

I get the impression that Marco and Kirsten were talking about relaunching the relaunch either before or at the same time Dave was putting Destiny together. Had Destiny not happened, I suspect we still would have seen a shorter version of Full Circle, at the least.

I'm pretty sure that Marco brought Kirsten aboard to re-relaunch the VGR novels well before Destiny came along. It took them a while to work out the story direction, get approval, find room in the schedule, and so on. Indeed, I seem to recall that the decision to do Destiny was one of the things that delayed Kirsten's VGR books, since it was decided to tie them into it.

Interesting. If Destiny hadn't happened the Borg would still be with us. Seven would not have been transformed, and certainly there wouldn't have been a Voyager fleet heading into the heart of Borg territory. Destiny really did change everything.

Exactly my point. What would the direction have been if that was the case? Would Voyager have been gutted back to the way it was prior to the foray into the DQ and sent out on long-range missions to explore? Would Voyager have stayed close to patrol? Would the ship have been used as a ferry like it was in Spirit Walk?

^ I think the intention with CG was that we would get stories about Janeway saving the Federation from the rogue changeling...

I found Golden's VOY relaunch novels to be awful. I didn't even make it through or past Homecoming, and the reviews of the novels that proceeded it were dreadful. I don't really care what direction the series would have taken. I'm just thankful that Marco Palmieri and Kirsten Beyer decided to switch gears and move the series in another direction. I actually enjoyed Full Circle and so far I'm enjoying Unworthy. I actually like VOY right now - and I can't believe I'm saying that.

Let's look at this logically. Even without Destiny Janeway would still be dead; she died prior to the Borg offensive. Chakotay would still be a basketcase, would likely have lost his command as he did in Full Circle, and without his focus on aiding Seven (who was not transformed) he might never have gotten his command back.

So Voyager gets a new captain anyway. Eden? Not likely as she was largely desk-bound and only received command of Voyager due to the machinations of Admiral Batiste. The original crew continues to scatter as there is nothing to really keep them aboard. Seven still loses her aunt Irene and without that human anchor retreats further into her Borg nature. Paris leaves to assist B'Elanna in the Miral-Klingon mess. Kim? Who knows. Voyager itself becomes just another ship in the Alpha Quadrant. Doesn't sound too promising.

^Except if Christie Golden had continued doing VGR novels, then the character of Captain Eden would never have been created. And if there'd been an ongoing VGR novel line at the time with plans for Janeway, then Janeway might not have died in Before Dishonor.

But it would make for drama.

Was Project Full Circle initiated in FC or was it suggested in the previous novels? If so, Voyager was always destined to go back into the Delta Quadrant, one way or another.

Project Full Circle was the creation of Admiral Batiste. No Batiste = no Full Circle = no return to the Delta Quadrant, especially since the Borg were still there.

Was the Janeway-Chakotay romance a part of Golden's books? I have to admit I never read any of them, but my recollection of/impression from Full Circle is that the two of them only decided to try pursuing a romantic relationship in the "lost years" between Spirit Walk and Before Dishonor.

Marco and I first discussed the new direction for Voyager in July of 2005. At that time we only settled on two things...Janeway was going to die in Peter David's Before Dishonor, which had already been contracted, and Voyager was going back to the Delta Quadrant.

Over the next few years, multiple outlines were created and either discarded or revised based on the developments of Destiny and the actual writing of Before Dishonor. I don't even like to think about the number of times we took a run at these stories before we finally hit upon what was published.

Project Full Circle was actually created by Christie, though never really fleshed out, which gave me lots of room to run with. I don't know that Christie's intention was to have Full Circle have anything to do with the DQ return. But since I knew that's where we were going, it was a logical direction for me to pursue, and for which Eden and Batiste were created.

The Janeway/Chakotay romance was always...I felt...hinted at during the run of the show and further hints that they were moving in that direction were given in the Homecoming/Farther Shore duology.

Kirsten Beyer

I believe that Christie Golden's Project Full Circle was simply about studying the technologies brought back by Voyager, including those from the future (which I think was the significance of the name, at least until Kirsten gave it a second, more apt meaning).

That's interesting.

I wonder what would have happened if Janeway hadn't been killed off, and WTF happened to Ellis after Spirit Walk? Was he killed by the Borg, did he try to destabilise everything before and after the invasion? Is anything going to be covered?

Ellis? You mean the changeling? That was covered in the first half of Full Circle.
He was caught by the species of the ambassador he replaced in Spirit Walk and killed while attempting to escape.

Agreed!

But I hope that they would've included the returning to the Delta Quadrant storyline. It's just a great story idea IMO (if predictable).
