Voyager is superior, it just is..

There's no doubt that The Original Series was ground breaking. I pay homage to it. Problem is it's kind of dragging down the visionary future as later series and the reboots somehow are dragged back in time clinging to references of the Original hoping to shine in its reflected glory no doubt. I mean Enterprise was enough of a prequel surely? The reboots had to go along that line and now the new kid on the block is also a bloody prequel. I mean like really? How pedestrian is that?

I'm sure Enterprise and the Movie reboots have entertained. But why have all the new developments since Voyager been following a backwards trend? Voyager the last we've seen of the 24th Century and glimpses of the 29th. Now that really is boldly going where no one has gone before, not limping back to old ground.

We are living in the age of reboots and polishing the vintage. That's really the only reason we got new Star Trek in the first place, because nifty shows and movies from the past are being revisited all the time.

And you do need the big money.. I would love to see a show or movie set in Daniel's 29nth Century or a show about the Temporal Cold War or .. but that's not gonna bring in the nostalgic masses, too niche. The only way we'll get that is if Discovery manages to make Trek different enough they can do it on their own power in a future show.

I'd get that vibe if it had happened once or twice. With a series prequel already a testament to it being received lukewarm with Enterprise, it is a surprise that they went that path again. The Movie reboots have done well but a movie is a different experience.

Discovery will appeal to an audience ready to stream and buy it first up. That's the same audience comparing Discovery with other examples in the genre of paid TV and streamed science fiction. I'm comparing Discovery's premise (obviously that's all we have) with what I know I have seen and enjoyed. I don't get a sense of fondness knowing a character is Spock's Dad. I didn't enjoy seeing copies of Kirk and Spock etc. in the reboots. Yet I DO have a fondness for wanting the franchise to continue. It's a matter of that alone that drew me in for a bit.

Voyager has the temporal references and as someone here suggested the Doctor could be a link. Any of the characters with children could or there could be fresh unrelated characters. I love the Voyager opening sequence where she steadies and then swiiiiiiiiiiiiiish disappears in a stream of light. Forward.

Although Voyager is one of my favorites, Enterprise is good too, and is it's own show. I only saw it this past year for the first time, and I wish there was more. Now that they're all on Netflix, Enterprise appears to have a growing fanbase.

As for Voyager, it's really a great show. It may have had the most challenging premise to write for-which I think was pulled of quite well with some unique and ambitious storytelling. I see no need to rank the shows or say one is better than another, which really just mean someone likes one over another

yeah seasons 3 and 4 of ENT were magnificent.

I generally really love whichever I'm watching at the time best, between VOY, ENT and DS9 at least. I don't compare TOS, it's in its own special place. But I love VOY for its humour and characters.. 7 of 9 is my all time favorite trek character. And Janeway, obviously I worship at her altar of Janewayness, I mean I adore her, I mean YES JANEWAY. Just good chemistry, most humour of any Trek show, often didn't take itself too seriously, some stellar actors and the bad ones are just meh not terrible.

Voyager eventually had some good points, with Tom and B'Elana being among the top of my list. But, the writing issues, and the rather consequence free (with some exceptions) writing style does not endear itself for repeat viewings

I felt Kes was underused, that Seven was overhyped, if a well acted character, and the episodic format of the show did not allow for a distinct feel to the show. It felt too much like TNG to me.

That said, it did gives us the Intrepid class, Tom Paris and B'Elana, both fun characters in their own right.

I've watched the Original too many times now :ouch: Last year they took off Voyager after one episode of Season 7 to put the Original on for its anniversary. I was looking at the opening sequence and that round, saucer shape of the first Enterprise and nearly cried. All right I didn't cry but when Kirk was posturing on the bridge instead of Janeway, I was pretty annoyed. It was so corny. Not even a tribble would've helped.

They run Next Generation on now and it's a little dated too but it has some solid favourites on board.

DS 9.. and I can't help compare.. it's just the nature of the beast.. sorry. DS 9 was stymied by not being a vessel. It just went depressing or something toward the end. I like some of its characters a lot. You need to see it for its place in the Star Trek universe.

I saw Enterprise sporadically when it was first screened. I love the guy playing Archer. I couldn't get into it. Tried so hard but if it is ever put on the box I'll give it a look.

Voyager has episodes that stand alone but it has a beginning and end with its full seven seasons. It is a journey. The concept was inspired to take it to another quadrant and be independent of Starfleet. The crew are family, they have to be. There is a freshness about it and a lack of trying too hard. Janeway is amazing as a Captain. She not once has to make it about being female, but she represents the gender well. I think the creators just got such an effortless balance.
It is interesting reading the comments critiquing the writing. I'm surprised every time :)

I'm looking fwd to (hopefully) less episodic Trek with Discovery.

Now that it's all on Netflix I think there will be a lot more new Trek viewers. I don't quite understand it but it's dramatically better visually than my dvd sets too. Looks great (all of it).

It's difficult not to compartmentalise in episodes but without advertising I guess that is a positive first viewing. Gives a sense of continuation.

Netflix will bring Netflix viewers, simple as that. Doesn't cover everyone.. There is an opportunity to buy DVDs though but I very rarely buy a collection of something to watch first.

I hope it does keep the franchise going even at a lower level.

Well it covers most people these days, so cheap.. also first month free so can binge entire series

Tv with advertising is on a slow death, well not so slow any more. Haven't watched it myself in about 10 years between streaming, downloading, dvd purchases and now netflix.

Gosh I am very old school then. I don't have unlimited Internet usage.. no cable.. 14 GBs a month.

Where's the emoticon of the tiny little violin playing..

^This. We're of like minds on this. I like TNG a lot too.

I haven't bought a DVD or Blu-ray in a long time. I never had cable growing up, and got when I first moved out, but all I did was flip through the channels, and got rid of it after a year or two. I've had Netflix for a long time. I used to get the DVD rentals through the mail, but now it's just streaming.

The only TV I watch now is the morning local news and weather.

Voyager's my favorite ship. It's just the right size. The Enterprise is so huge and bulky, it must be endless corridors that all look the same inside. The NX is nice too. The scale is just more relatable.

EDIT: All Trek shows are episodic. To me each show has a totally different vibe.

What I liked about the NX-01 was the submarine feel inside, went a long way to giving you the feel this was early years, more utilitarian. I also like the NX-01 exterior the best. I'm not a ship pr0n person though, I watched Star Trek for decades and then sat up when I saw the NX-01 and said why helloooo..

I love VOY's double eps, well most of them. As good as a movie, i rewatch those quite often.

Careful that's not a popular opinion on large parts of this board.

Anyway let me wax poetical-Nostalgia seems to be the dominant zeitgeist of the age because of a few reasons-an aging population, a youth culture that is immensely cynical and has high standards, a general disillusionment with forward movement, increased political polarization, Hollywood drawing from the bottom of the barrel, the utter bankruptcy of politics and popular culture-in every possible moral sense, the inability for other institutions-churches, unions, schools to handle the vast swirling clouds and shifts-I hate saying the word change in this context it's both elitist and offensive. The fact that things aren't getting better, culture is a bucket of filth, and everybody preaches doom and defeat-the left-total atomization of society and environmental catastrophe, as well as the total destruction of the unions and emasculation of left wing movements and thoughts, the right-total collapse of morals, mass invasion by Islamic hordes and teeming third world masses, combined with a moral climate likened unto Sodom and the court of the Caesars.

With doom, division, fear, confusion, and pain on nearly everyone's minds people for the past-sometimes a real past and sometimes an imagined one.

What ills bode us in the twilight of our civilization God Help us all.
