First, I wanted to apologize to have been less present lately due to my Mum's unexpected death. I needed to step back a little...
About Discovery compared to Voyager, I'd say that I appreciated to see again strong women taking the lead after Kathryn Janeway or Kira Nerys.

-> I was more impressed by Michelle Yeoh (aka Capt Philippa Georgiou)'s performance than by Sonequa Martin-Green (aka Michael Burnham)'s one even if this one had character as XO, much more than Chakotay!).
-> I followed the whole s1 but I already know that the next will be without me. this new adventure of the saga was a bit too violent for me , without talking about the fact that it went in too much directions as the point to make things confusing for me and tired me quickly!
That being said, I'd say that the big change with Voyager I appreciated was the fact that the producers did not hesitate to knowingly kill important people, regardless how upsetting it would be for viewers because well, casualities during a mission - controlled or not, long or short - can fall on anyone, known or unknown, loved/hatedor indifferent. It is the normal short of things which is respected. What is interested afterwards, is the emotional impact that these losses would have on
those who remain alive but potentially hurt physically and/or disturbed emotionally and psychologically...

I never understood why the small team of senior officiers in Voyager, remained unchanged in 7 years while other minor officers on board (even if they weren't so numerous at the end) dropped like flies over the attacks and diseases. It was just incoherent!

And please, do not talk about the death of Adm. Kathryn Janeway which was insignificant because let's be honest, excepted sharing the same face and body that our beloved Captain, even if older than 20-25 years, she was a stranger so, with no true emotional attachment.
On the other hand, disorganizing the Voyager's "family" in killing one of them (Chakotay, Tuvok, Seven, B'Elena or Tom) would surely have had another impact, emotionally deeper, on viewers because well, we had time to get used to, to focus on and of course to appreciate them -> suddenly not to see them on the Bridge and/or during the staff meetings anymore, would have hit us hard, knowing what they brought to Voyager and the "family" and how Janeway would have felt pained guilty for their loss (and we know how dedicated she was with her senior staff)
* Note that I didn't quote Cpt Kathryn Janeway among the potential casualities because, whether we want it or not, her character killed off, there would be no series anymore. This is surely why the producers have always made sure to keep her alive.and the actress on board!
