Voyager: Elite Force

Picked it up for the PS2 today (no, this thread hasn't fallen through a time vortex, I'm just into old games and pick em up when I see them cheap). Never played it before as I wasn't into first person shooters back when it was new. I have a higher tolerance for them these days though so I'm looking forward to giving it a go. What does everyone think of it? I know the quality of Trek games varies wildly, is this one of the 'good' ones?

For it's time it is very very good, and makes use of the Quake 3 engine very well. It actually utilizes quite a bit of the Voyager cast very well too. The story line isn't amazing, but it get's the job done, getting you to and through several different environments and fighting Klingons, Borg, and various delta quadrant bad guys.

Some of the best parts of the game are the recreations of the Voyager interiors. You get a good feel for the whole ship.

I'm unfamiliar with the PS2 implementation, since I never played it.
But I absolutely loved playing EF for Windows PC, especially the multiplayer mode, using the mods and skins that the online community created.

Like @Kor, I had the PC version and I thought it was very good. EF2 was also fairly decent (Certainly better graphics, but I think I replayed the first one more)

Seems alright so far. Shot Tuvok in the tutorial... couldn't resist.
Ha, I think literally everyone did that!

I loved the game, it was a FPS but there was a decent amount of problem solving to do that made it feel like Star Trek. The bits on the ship were great, and I liked that you could pick the gender of "Alex" - that seemed pretty progressive for 1998 or whenever it was. I always went for Alexandria, which made the flirting with Telsia subplot even more progressive for Trek!

I can't remember if I ever finished EF2 in the end. It wasn't as fun as EF because you didn't get the whole cast.

I thought it was good, but it probably heps that we are Trek Fans.. Also Voyager was maybe not the best show for it. DS9 really deserved a shooter.

Wasn't The Fallen a DS9 shooter? Vaguely remember it got a major mod overhaul as well to add in new stuff.

It was a 3rd person sorta shooter. A very good game indeed, but not really a first person shooter like Elite Force

After playing it for a while, I've come to the conclusion that the PS2 version is a bad port from the PC. The controls barely function (it's a major feat just to climb a ladder at the first time of asking), the frame rate absolutely tanks whenever there are more than 2 enemies on the screen and the graphics while not terrible are below par for the PS2. It just doesn't seem to be optimised in any way for playing on a console. I stuck with it for as long as I could but I had to throw in the towel eventually.

The game itself was fun enough, I might pick up a copy for PC if I see one, though I'm not much of a PC gamer. If you see the PS2 version out in the wild though, just keep walking.

The portable photon torpedo launcher was the weapon to end all weapons.

I have very fond memories of this game. The campaign was solid and the multiplayer was very configurable and fun. EF2 was also very good.

Yeah I was gonna say, the PS2 version was unanimously condemned back in the day for being a very sloppy port job.

The PC version (which I played on Day One) was excellent though, being able to walk around on the VOY bridge was mindblowing back in the day.

I was really into Elite Force back in the day. I loved walking about the ship, and I really enjoyed the story too.

And it wasn't about the dominion war sadly

The Dominion was in it, you face their forces at least two times during each character's playthrough. A shooter in which you fight the Dominion the whole time would get repetitive eventually.

I don't know, I think it could work. You could fight the Jem'Hadar, Cardassians, Breen, have some kind of level where you have to locate/eliminate a changeling, intersperse with some spacey dogfight type battles, maybe throw in some Klingons and Romulans if you fancy it and you'd have yourself a decent game.
