Mortal Coil... let me see... why IMO is it the worst of season 4?
* Too dark for VOY, too dark even for DS9
* Mulgrew almost goes out of character at the beginning of the episode in the corridor when talking to Neelix. In fact, several actors seemed off (This is all before the accident)
* That one seen where Neelix is looking for the cylinder and calling out to it saying, "Oh cylinder..." argh! One of his most annoying moments.
* The first kid (other than the baby) who plays Naomi Wildman is really bleh
These are not quibbles with the general premise of someone dying, being reanimated, having doubts, etc. but there were a lot of flaws in its execution, in terms of production and directing and such.
It also really seems like something from another sci-fi show, in its mood and all, the music, the lighting, etc. Something too heavy for Voyager. This premise isn't a good fit for the show besides, since it was primetime tv. Would have worked better on a cable show like the Outer Limits.
I find it interesting that it came from a draft script where Samantha Wildman died, was reanimated with nanoprobes, and turned into some kind of 'zombie mom' that went nuts and tried to kill Naomi so she could be reanimated and they could be zombies together. When you start out with something like that for a Voyager episode, perhaps it's best to scrap the idea altogether.
