Well I'm stunned that so few enjoy the subtleties of the double pendulum, and can't fully appreciate the two linearly independent periodic modes the system exhibits in the limit of small angles, viz;

(mode 1)
theta2 = sqrt(2) * theta1 ; frequency = f

(mode 2)
theta2 = -sqrt(2) * theta1 ; frequency = 2f

;)
WOW! I wish you had posted this before the vote.
I have no idea what you're talking about, but at least I would have been impressed with your grasp of the situation. :cool:

The double pendulum was rather hypnotic.

For a chaotic system your entry did seem a little ... hmmm ... lacking in the chaos department ;)

In the limit of small angles, sin(θ) --> θ, cos(θ) --> 1, which makes the governing equations linear, which does not exhibit chaotic behaviour. It is much like a coupled spring system.

But even in the general case, chaotic systems can still have periodic orbits. They are dense and unstable so no real world experiment would ever reveal them; the only attractors being the chaotic attractors.

One of the best demonstrations of this is in one dimensional IFS systems, where the Sharkovskii theorem applies: If a system has a period three orbit, then the system will have a chaotic attractor and will also have an infinite number of periodic orbits of all periods. So somewhere within it there would be an orbit with a period of one googolplex.
I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. But voted for you, because your avatar just looked so great. :rommie:

OK, I'm calling this one.

Congrats to auntiehill and trekkiedane for their excellent examples of DOUBLE!

I'll leave it to you two to split the duty for the next contest.

^Usually we only have a couple of days for the voting (with one day a 'weekday' and one a day of the weekend -to give both home and office voters a chance to do their thing)

Thanks also to Aragorn, iguana_tonante and mimic!

So, auntie, do you have the next one ready, and are you setting it up? -or should I?

Hey -- since it's double the pleasure for winning, why not have it a double contest, with each user having their own contest in one thread? Or maybe both users deciding on one theme, but allowing two submissions from each user?

How if we do whatever auntie comes up with and I do a 'make a misc. avatar contest winner trophy avatar' contest?

Anyone up for that?

:lol:

I agree we need a trophy for these contests. Over at ENT we have a Golden Porthos.

Not sure what image might exemplify "Miscellaneous."

OK. I'll see if I can come up with an idea soon.

Do you want to do the poll or just stick with your trophy contest?

^Seeing the way the misc. avatar contests have brought us many great and very different nonmedia entries every time, I'm confident there will also be a few good ideas for a trophy :bolian:

I wouldn't mind putting up the poll (just let me know when you want it)

Meanwhile I'll put up a trophy thread and have the duration and vote on that coincide with the contest.
