For those of you with Facebook, here is a link to the news.

For those of you who do not, here is the text of the post...
Re author Vonda N McIntyre.
Very unhappily, Kate Schaefer informs us:

Vonda spent much of Seattle's snow week at Swedish Hospital with jaundice and some vertigo, having many tests. The test results are in now, and the news is not good. The diagnosis is inoperable metastatic pancreatic cancer. Her doctor said it isn't stupid to hope for a year, but it could be less. She'll probably be getting treatment that may or may not slow things down, no way to know for sure.

Vonda is at home. For the time being, Vonda would prefer not to get emails or phone calls about her health. She's resting a lot, and has a good bit of work to do. Eileen Gunn has agreed to take point on answering questions.

Jane Hawkins is trying to organize people who want to assist Vonda, or who just want to visit a while. For now, Vonda doesn't need a lot of help -- rides to various medical encounters, meals, laundry, and so on. If you want to assist, please shoot Jane an email describing what might work for you. If you want to visit, please go through Jane to get it scheduled.

---[END of Kate's message------

For myself, I'll note that I've known and adored Vonda for decades and my first instinct is to ferry across the Sound to be with her a while, whatever good that could do. But I respect her desire for privacy, and perhaps on my own I'll just listen to Neil Young singing Helpless. So many people love Vonda, who live near her, I think volunteers will be numerous through Jane.

Life and death are woeful things. All we can do is try to be the best versions of ourselves we can be, and strive to get the most happiness we can, and share the most compassion, during our brief existence. By this measure Vonda's life of creativity and kindness has been a wild success.

Energy, science tells us, cannot be created or destroyed; the spark that once gave us life merely transforms and is still in the universe, as even the dust of us begins its billions-year journey back into the stars.

She was one of my first Star Trek authors, having written the adaptations of ST2-4. I also sought out her non-novelization novels "The Entropy Effect" and "Enterprise: The First Adventure", both of which are favorites of mine.

My thoughts and best wishes are with Miss McIntyre and her friends and loved ones during this difficult time.

Like jbarney, McIntrye one of the first, probably the first, Star Trek novelist I read. (The first Star Trek novel I ever bought was the novelization of Star Trek III.) This news hurts.

I recommend her historical fantasy, The Sun and the Moon, about sea creatures and the court of Louis XIV. It came out in the late 90s and won the Nebula.

Sad indeed. After thoroughly enjoying "The Entropy Effect" (having been teased by extracts in "Starlog" and the subsequent "Don't Kill Kirk!" Campaign) and then ST II's novelization, I found a second hand copy of "Dreamsnake and other stories" while on vacation, having exhausted the books I had brought with me.

And then she topped it all with ST III. I enjoyed parts of "Enterprise: The First Adventure", too, but it was at odds with DC Comics' first annual, which also celebrated the 20th anniversary of TOS. Until then, DC and Pocket had done a little cross pollination and I was hopeful for more.

Sending my best wishes to Ms McIntyre.

No matter how many Trek books were published since, I always found time to re-read "Entropy Effect" every few years or so. She did justice to the "Big Three" in a way that many who followed probably learned much from.

I really enjoyed The Entropy Effect, but my favourite of hers is Enterprise: The First Adventure. In my mind, that's how the original crew united.

I plan to read her Trek movie novelizations someday.

Sad to hear. One of my very first Star Trek novels was her adaptation of TVH. In fact, I think it was my first novel (Battlestations was my first original novel).

:( I'm so sorry to hear Vonda is so ill. Her Tos movie novels are still some of my favorite Star trek books. The first book of hers I read was The Wrath of Khan. And I've read her scifi and fantasy novels I got from the library.

She was one of the first Trek authors I read. Yes, sad news.

Was the same with me. I only knew TNG at the time but her "Wrath of Khan" Novelization was among the very first Star Trek books i ever read.

This are very sad news for me, too. I wish her all the best.

I’m so sorry to hear this. Her work and the writing of the early trek writers helped turn a fun sci-if show into show into a lifelong love.
