Vonage?

Has anyone had dealings with this phone/broadband/interwebby company please? From their website they are primarily US based but now in the UK. Sounds too good to be true, I could cut my phone bill by 70% ~ but isn't that what they all say?
Any advice gratefully received.

Service works fine if you have a good broadband connection but their customer service sucks.

I prefer Voicepulse myself.

It works very well. However, some equipment does not work well the service (certain security systems, etc.).

They're telling me I won't have to pay for line rental? But in UK my broadband won't work without paying BT line rental? So how does that work ~ I know 'go to the web-site and look it up'! I have but it doesn't make it clear, I just wondered if anyone in UK has experience of it?

Most services require a landline to be installed in order to get an internet service (I think Virgin Media's cabled area's are different - a little behind there). We use Virgin National and we need a phone line here...

I'm a couple of years out of date with my customer service knowledge so I may be wrong... but it sounds like you don't need to have a phone line to use their service. But you'd likely need a phone line to get your internet service, therefor you'd still need a phone line.

It's odd that information can't be found on the site (well I haven't been able to and admittedly I am shattered)

You don't necessarily need a line, as long as your computer has a high speed internet connection. You plug a line from your computer to the vonage box, and then from the vonage box to a phone. At least that's how mine worked, but that was a few years ago and it was in the U.S.

If you have it in the U.K. I recommend MagicJack. Same thought behind Vonage but cheaper ($49.99 first year, $19.99 renewal every year after) and super mobile. I can take it with my laptop and use the phone at a site with wi-fi access off my computer with just headphones/microphones without a phone.

Thanks Murph, will look into MajicJack. It's just combining the BT line, the O2 mobile and broadband and bringing a 3rd party in ~ makes me think billing will be a pain in the arse

Hey MLB Have no idea. I just got a sales call from them and for a change I didn't deny my identity but listen ~ the guy was cool and got me intrigued. If they do, however have irritating ads, I may not be so inclined towards giving them my business

Then consider yourself lucky. I am not inclined to believe that British television could have possibly had an ad, or series of ads, that is anywhere near as vile....

I have AT&T. I don't know if it helps you at all, but I have their broadband DSL service WITHOUT having a phone line. Well, I mean, I have a phone jack in my wall, but I don't have any phone service.

Don't know about Britain but in the states you can physically unplug the phone service line coming into your house, then you plug the vonage (or whatever service) line into any phone jack in your home. That makes all the phone jacks in your entire home active with vonage (or whoever). So you are not limited to just a phone plugged into the adapter.
