Spoilers Visual continuity - Does Discovery strictly need to show past designs... at all?

Even if it was dropped between two movies where the character was an American in-universe?

I don't know. Characters get recast all the time. How many different actors, of different races, have played Felix Leiter in the Bond movies at this point? He's gone from white to black to white to black again.

And need I mention Billy Dee Williams turning into Tommy Lee Jones in a single cycle of BATMAN movies?

Again, it's possible to get too hung up on the "in-universe" thing. Sometimes the answer is just . . it's show-biz, folks. :)

Yeah, the TOS ship design was a single type tossed as soon as budget allowed. It has a tiny impact on over all ship design

Yeah, I almost went blind eyerolling at that bit of nonsense.

It’s not eyerolling bad, it’s just a silly little cheesy conceit, a joke. But it does seem to apply, to an extent, in this argument. It’s also worth remembering Dax fondling her Tricorders and waxing lyrical on its design. Again, a cheesy joke, but again, it’s deeper meaning shows a lot of stuff we see as ‘less advanced’ is just a matter of aesthetic choices in the fiction of Star Trek. Like how we have moved away from skeumorphism after Apple got fed up with it. This plays into both sides of the argument frankly.

I think that line was speaking for the fans of the original Star Trek. :techman:

Between DSC and ENT, that single episodes offhand jokes and Easter eggs have had more impact on Treks development than anything else. David Gerrold must be pleased, as it all comes down to Tribbles.

Indeed. I actually have been having fun exploring Apple concepts for Star Trek tech :)

I understand what you're saying, and it kind of depends on the person whether one can see things that way. I'm very visual person and to me how the things look is pretty damn essential part of the setting.
I'm visual person too. My training/education is The Fine Arts, painting and drawing, yet I've no problem accepting new and different looks as long as they work for me on various levels. The DISCO uniforms still aren't working form me. The ship has grown on me. The various props have worked for me from the start.

If it is alleged to be around the Cage, then it needs to fit in.crwsting new ship classescwe have not seen, it looks like they fit thatvtke period, fine. Reimagining Klingon D class shops is not.

The visual aesthetics are a deal-breaker for me unless there is a qualified explanation. Props and sets from the 60s are necessary if you want to do a Star Trek period piece. I want Discovery to end so we can finally get a Prime Universe show back on TV.

Am I cranky? Yes, I am. I waited a long time for new Star Trek... And I'm still waiting. Discovery is the reason we don't have Star Trek on TV right now.

Since they didn't want to do a Star Trek period piece, it's all good.

You're gonna be waiting a long time. The "Star Trek period piece" you're waiting for ain't happening.

Sigh... What I'm really waiting for is something set in the Prime Universe after Voyager and Nemesis.

Would that be sustainable, though?

Then you're a better man than I am. :techman:
I'm not totally immune. When a canon violation happens I'm like this

But it passes.
