Spoilers Visual continuity - Does Discovery strictly need to show past designs... at all?

I wonder if this example will make sense, but I liken it to Republic Y-Wings vs. Rebel Y-Wings. While the basic shapes are the same, the surface details given a different impression.

Great example. The Republic Y-Wings look like they just came off the assembly line. Meanwhile the Rebel Y-Wings look refurbished and retrofitted. But with good reason. The Republic had the means and facilities to repair them to look like new while the Rebels probably didn't always have access to high tech repair station so they had to jury rig, cobble together and practically do what they could to keep their ships running and in working order.

We have no clue if the Kelvin is a design here or not. The Kelvin "timeline" is an alt reality. We have never seen the Kelvin design in any other reality so far. I mean in Prime Kirk was no born on a star ship and pre Galaxy Class families did not live in such ships.

USS Kelvin is a prime time timeline ship, Mr Pegg's thoughts about that notwithstanding. It predates the Narada incursion (where Kirk was apparently born prematurely when the timeline changed). Whether CBS chooses to show Kelvin or a ship like it in their new show is up to them. I'd like to see it, though.

I don't think we'll see the Kelvin -- at least not in ST 2009 form -- because its design was created by the Paramount division and DSC is CBS.

I'd think the designs would have to be different out of legal necessity so that one is CBS and one is Paramount.

It's part of why, I suspect even if the Defiant isn't exactly the TOS Design, they couldn't go with the Kelvin Design for the Constitution Class either.

Once more, we never saw it in prime. Not saying its not out there, but we have not seen it in prime and if we do its unlikely to look the same ( different style totally). But I do so like that ship design personally ( other than deflector and nacelle). I would love to see it in another style personally, I am not a big fan of the Kelvin ship styling and textures.

Isn't the Kelvin from before the temporal spilt?

That's up for interpretation, it seems. If the Narada altered the timeline forwards and backwards (as Simon Pegg believes), everything may have changed suddenly when it appeared, Yesterday's Enterprise-style.
Right, I've heard that. But, that struck me as odd, but fair enough,

I have no strong opinions about it, but I suppose I'd like to think the Kelvin had a slightly different appearance pre-Nero. Doesn't really make much difference to me though.

DSC has a unique look among Treks. The TOS Connie or even the USS Kelvin wouldn't fit that look.

If the Kelvin shows up, I guess it'll look different, probably with parts from the Binary Stars fleet.

Really people. The Klingons are different. The bird of prey and D7 are different. The Federation ships look different and are entirely different sizes. Now we know the Connie is different. What makes anyone think they're going to maintain the continuity of one or two things when they've made a deliberate choice to alter so much??

There is no "the way time travel works" in Star Trek. There are multiple different ways that time travel manifests in Trek. It all depends on what the writer needs for their story to work.

It tends to work the same way every time. If I am missing one where it ever worked otherwise, list it please.

It isn't unreasonable to think that they'll maintain the continuity of a few things because those things happen to be so extremely iconic that even most of the people who pay almost no attention to ship design would notice if something like the basic design of the Enterprise were radically altered.

Apart from the most common (time gets changed, then needs to be fixed) ...as mentioned, ST11 creates an alternate reality. Time's Arrow is a closed-loop where everything that will happen has already happened. The Prophets can move people around willy-nilly in time without altering other events, and people are able to retain memories of events that no longer happened. In Endgame, a future Janeway comes back in time to get her crew home sooner. She then dies, but nothing that she helped cause reverts to the way it was before.

...And let's not forget the Nexus. And Q!

Just beause the characters say that they are "fixing time" doesn't mean that's what's actually happening. They are moving around in paralell universes/timelines and "fixing time" actually means "get ourselves (and the viewers) to a nice timeline".
