Vista networking issue

I'm hoping someone will be able to help with an issue I'm having. On my old XP machine I was able to access my workplace network files using a https link in 'my network places'.

I now have a Vista 32bit machine and I am trying to do the same but with no joy. I am trying to add a network location using by right clicking in 'computer' and clicking add a 'network connection'. I follow the instructions (seem straight forward) and copy in the full address for the connection. When I click on next nothing happens and the system just seems to freeze up.

Has anyone got any advice? My new laptop is quite pretty and I'm getting close to throwing it out of the window.

How are the computers getting their IP addresses?

Can you ping from one computer to another using both computer name and ip addresses?

Are they in the same workgroup?

Oh dear this is where I come completely unstuck.

I have no answer to all of those questions. All I know is that my old XP laptop still connects but the new Vista one doesn't.

The XP laptop is my old personal one and as far as I know I didn't do anything to it to get it to connect.

I can access the network by putting the address into a browser but I only get the default view rather than the folders.

I'll just have to go to the netwrok center at work and see if they can tell me.

Instead of pasting the address inside your browser, open up a windows explorer window (Right click on the start button and select Explore) and paste it in the address bar there.

My XP and Vista machines can't talk to one another either. I have no idea why. I didn't have this problem when my network was XP, NT 4 and 98 SE.
